How much has changed in your lifetime? As I look back at our local communities many things have changed, and not all for the better. Over the last 30 or 40 years our communities have lost many small businesses and stores, where at one time we could purchase all the items that we needed in our daily life.
But what happened? I wish I could blame the government or some unseen force that took away our small town shops.
But, I can’t. I have to place the blame for it on myself and the rest of us that live in small town USA. Maybe I can blame the car, that, has allowed us travel to the big city to do our shopping, but then it is our choice and we watched as the local shops closed and now we have nothing but several empty store fronts.
This brings me to a thought that I had about change! It seems like every presidential cycle when there is a sitting Republican in the White House the other party pushes change in their election garbage.
As for me, I like what we have at this time, but I also liked what we had twenty or thirty years ago. I don’t need changes, but then I must be in a rut.
I might compare it to the changes made in the fashion industry. They change in order to boost sales by offering something different, just like the automobiles change every year.
I watched the blue jeans change from just pants for us guys to a fashion item that changed with adding the washed look, cut a hole in them and change more, change them to riding on the hip instead of the waist, so that when you bend over your butt crack is exposed. Lovely thought, right? Announced last week was the new fashion in jeans is that one leg will be larger than the other. That should make a fashion statement.
I also watched the change in maturity clothes too. Was a time when a pregnant woman wore loose fitting clothes when she was showing. That was the case even through our childbearing years. But now its ‘tighter is better’ to show off that baby bump.
Now, the big political change is that Bernie Sanders, the guy who is one of a dozen or more Democratic candidates running for president is promoting a big change in the way we live. Last week he shouted that he wants everything free. Free health care, free education, free to everyone including free to undoctumented illegal immigrants. I don’t know if this came from Sanders or another Democratic candidate but they offered a government check, of $1,000 a month to everyone.
The Democrats have found a new way to get elected and that is to open the government checkbook to everyone.
So. How will we pay for the new free giveaways from our Uncle Sam? He will have to tax everyone that has an income and a savings account and then will have to borrow billions of dollars to finance the giveaway program. With the federal government in debt well over $22 billion dollars now, where will it come from?
I had hoped that Trump would be able to address the federal government’s debt, but he has all the changes that he promised during the election in 2016 to take care of, so he cannot address the debt.
