MILWAUKEE — His athletic prowess and achievements have brought recent Boyceville graduate Brock Schlough many honors and accolades.
Even months after he etched his name in the WIAA state wrestling history books by becoming just the 17th Wisconsin high school wrestler to win four consecutive individual state championships, Schlough’s accomplishments continued to be lauded and honored.
Schlough was chosen as the 2019 High School Athlete of the Year at the 8th Annual Wisconsin Sports Awards hosted by Good Karma Brands on June 6 in Milwaukee at the Fiserv Forum.
The Wisconsin Sports Awards is an invitational-only event that celebrates excellence in Wisconsin high school, collegiate and professional sports.
Schlough, who attended the event with his family, was chosen from three finalists to receive the award live at the Fiserv Forum. Grace Bennin of Mount Horeb High School and David Vannucchi from Onalaska Luther High School were this year’s other two finalists.
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jeremy Jeffress presented Schlough with a plaque to commemorate the honor in front of more than 600 attendees.
Other award recipients included: Leo Chenal, Grantsburg High School, High School Football Player of the Year; Wisconsin Badger running back Jonathan Taylor, College Athlete of the Year; and Brewers’ player and Major League Baseball’s reigning MVP Christian Yelich to name a few.
Schlough capped an outstanding high school wrestling career this past February, when he won his fourth straight WIAA state individual wrestling crown by capturing his second consecutive Division 3 title at 152 pounds with a unblemished 50-0 record.
Brock, who won 183 of his 188 high school matches over the past four seasons, posted an amazing 97-0 mark over the past two seasons. In addition to back-to-back titles at 152 pounds in his final two years, Schlough won the D3, 138 pound state championship in 2016 with a 42-4 record and went 43-1 during his sophomore campaign to capture the state gold in the D3, 160-pound weight class.
Schlough, who was picked unanimously for the 2018-19 Dunn-St. Croix Wrestler of the Year, helped lead Boyceville to its second straight conference championship as well as a regional title and a sectional runner-up finish.
As Boyceville’s first and only four-time state champion, Schlough holds several of the Bulldogs’ records including career wins (183), career takedowns (381), most near falls in a single season (183 set in 2017-18) and career team points (1252.5).
In addition, Schlough tallied 81 reversals, 50 escapes and had 90 pins.
Schlough will take his talents to St. Cloud State this fall.
