Street Construction projects to begin in Village of Boyceville

BOYCEVILLE — Road Construction is set to begin within a week on three street construction projects within the Village of Boyceville. The Village Board learned Monday evening that work would begin on the Main Street Project, extending Charlotte Street and the reconstruction of Winter Street.
During his presentation to the Village Board Erik Evenson of MSA Engineering presented details of the projects and also presented bids for the Charlotte Street and Winter Street projects. He indicated that the Main Street Project contractor would like to start next week on rebuilding the Village’s Main Street.
Evenson also presented the board with bids for the Charlotte Street extension. The extension will run from just east of Highway 79 and connect Charlottee Street to Range Road. The extension is needed to serve the new fire station, but it will also open up a couple of lots in the area. Evenson noted to the board that a land swap of just over four thousand square feet with Synergy Cooperative was done to allow for the road extension.
The village had received three bids for the project, with the low bid from Haas Sons, Inc. out of Thorp, that was accepted by the board. That bid was for $414,172.50. A-1 Excavating’s bid was for $423,366. The high bid was from Pember Companies at $445,7912.96. Work is expected to start this week.
The Village Board also accepted the bid from Oium Asphalt, Inc. of Eleva, WI, for the Winter Street project at $56,150.00. The Village received three other bids on that project which ranged from $78,813.51 to $80,576.00. Work is expected to start very soon on this project.
Another street project that was the subject of a pubic hearing was the realigning of the alley between Main Street and Tiffany Street where it intersects with Highway 79. The property there is the subject of new building construction that will house Bfit Fitness Center. Terra and Eric Engeman presented the board with photo of their proposed structure. The property is the former spot where Frieburg Farm Equipment was located. The Board approved the alley realignment.
Also appearing before the Village Board was Rick Bloomfield who requested allowing him to close off the alley behind his business to set up a tent to allow for a benefit on May 18. The board approved his request.
During his report, Public Works Director Don Rose informed the Village board that the wastewater treatment ponds were full and they have been discharging into the river since the first of the month, but they were having problems meeting the phosphorus limits. He noted that he would be in contact with the DNR over the problem. Rose also noted that water temperatures at customers are still within the freezing point.
During his report, Police Chief Greg Lamkin noted that the winter parking rules are now off, but with the possibility of snow this week, he would issue an emergency order banning parking on village streets, to allow for snow removal.
His report stated, “We issued six traffic citations and one ordinance citation to municipal court. We made four misdemeanor arrests and one felony arrest on a child abuse case from last year. We spent quite a bit of time conducting follow up investigations that required several search warrants and records subpoenas and reviewed a lot of digital evidence. We attended the sentencing for Ted Lopez as he was sentenced to decades in prison for his abuse of several children in our community and are glad he has been held accountable.”
Lamkin also reported that his department has received a $4,000 grant to purchase three new Automatic External Defibrillators and that there will be a drug take back event for Saturday, April 27 at the Village Hall.
