COLFAX — With two meets under their belts, the Colfax boys’ and girls’ powerlifting teams have qualified three individuals for the USA Powerlifting Wisconsin High School State Championship in Appleton, WI on March 2-3.
According to Vikings’ head powerlifting coach Matt DeMoe, Colfax had 13 athletes compete in the first meet of the 2018-19 season which was held in River Falls back on December 8.
Four members of the Colfax contingent finished in the top three.
Sophomore Jaclyn Olson finished third in the 123-pound weight class with a 145-pound squat, 75-pound bench press and a 205-pound dead lift as her best lifts.
Sydney Herrick finished in first place in the 242-pound plus weight class and qualified for state. The three best lifts for the sophomore was a 235-pound squat, 105-pound bench press and 275-pound dead lift.
Bailey Schlough finished in second place in the 148-pound weight class after she posted best lifts of 250 pounds in the squat, 135 pounds in the bench press and a 280-pound dead lift.
Finishing in first place for the boys was sophomore Chase Aspengren in the 275-pound plus weight class. His best lifts were a 315-pound squat, 210-pound bench press and a 345-pound dead lift.
Asher Pesha started the season off with a fourth-place finish for the Vikings in the 114-pound weight class with a 120-pound squat, 75-pound bench press and a 175-pound dead lift.
The Vikings traveled to Osceola on January 12 and had seven powerlifters finish in the top three and with one more qualifying for state.
Jaclyn Olson competed in the 123-pound weight class once again and improved on each of her best lifts posted at the first meet at River Falls in December. Olson finished with a 150-pound squat, 80-pound bench press and a 225-pound dead lift.
Finishing first in the 242-pound plus weight class was Sydney Herrick. Herrick improved her squat lift by 30 pounds to finish with a 265-pound squat, and had a 105-pound bench press and a 275-pound dead lift.
Bailey Schlough also improved one of her lifts as she finished second in the 148-pound weight class with a 250-pound squat, 135-pound bench press and a 300-pound dead lift. With two meets under her belt, Schlough became a state qualifier for the state meet in early March.
In his first meet of the season, senior Dalton Klukas finished in second place at Osceola in the 132-pound weight class and earned a berth to state in Appleton. Klukas finished with a 245-pound squat, 210-pound bench press and a 290-pound dead lift.
Chase Aspengren improved on one of his three lifts and earned his second, first-place finish in the 275-pound plus weight class. Aspengren finished his day out with a 315-pound squat, 225-pound bench press and a 315-pound dead lift.
Stepping up for the Vikings were Austin Schindler, who finished in second place in the 220-pound weight class and Koby Flodquist, who placed third in the 275-pound weight class.
Schindler finished the meet with a 285-pound squat, 160-pound bench press and 340-pound dead lift, while Flodquist tallied lifts a 350 pounds in the squat, 195 pounds for the bench press and a 385 pounds in the dead lift.
The Vikings will travel to Elk Mound for a regional meet this Saturday, February 9, and a final opportunity to have more Colfax lifters qualify for state competition in March. Lifting will begin at 9 a.m.
