A Hammond woman was killed earlier Friday morning in the St. Croix County township of Pleasant Valley when her car struck a horse that had been standing in the roadway.
53-year-old Diane G. Johnson of Hammond was pronounced dead at the scene.
The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office responded to the one-vehicle crash on CTH T approximately 3/10 of a mile south of CTH Z in the Town of Pleasant Valley at 6:42 a.m. Friday, October 12, 2018.
A preliminary investigation indicated that Johnson’s 2009 Chevrolet Impala had been southbound on CTH T when it struck a brown-colored horse that was standing in the middle of the roadway. Johnson’s vehicle, which sustained extensive damage, then went into the east ditch and came to rest in a farm field.
The horse was killed and was in the middle of the roadway when first responders arrived.
Despite life saving measures at the scene by sheriff’s deputies and Baldwin EMS, Johnson was pronounced dead by the St. Croix County Medical Examiner.
Johnson was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Assisting at the scene was Baldwin EMS, United Fire and Rescue and the St. Croix County Medical Examiner.
Johnson’s death is the ninth traffic fatality in St. Croix County for 2018, and the second in a week’s time. Joshua Derrick was killed in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of US Highway 63 and CTH G last Friday, October 5.
The crash remains under investigation by the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office.
