Colfax High School to hold 2nd Annual Colfax Beautification Day April 27

COLFAX  — Colfax High School students and staff will be holding the 2nd Annual Colfax Beautification Day on Friday, April 27, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Sunday, April 22, was the 48th annual Earth Day celebration.

Earth Day is celebrated around the world and was founded by Wisconsin politician and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson.

Nelson served as a state senator from 1948 to 1958. In 1958, Nelson was elected as governor of Wisconsin and served for four years. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1963 and served until 1981.

Gaylord Nelson died July 3, 2005.

“Thanks to Earth Day founder, Gaylord Nelson, and many other influential Wisconsin conservationists, today we enjoy safe drinking water; clean air; fishable streams, rivers and lakes; and soil rich enough to raise our own food,” said Mark Mosey, Colfax High School biology teacher and the advisor for Colfax Beautification Day.

“On Friday, April 27, we as a high school would like to continue to instill their environmental stewardship ideas with our students,” he said.

The students and their advisors will be assigned a stretch of roadway to pick up trash.

Items too big to fit in trash bags along with full trash bags will be left on the shoulders of the road, and county and township personnel will pick up the trash afterwards.

Students in Mosey’s Global Science class, who helped organize the 2nd Annual Colfax Beautification Day, also developed a recipe for a snack mix as a treat for students and staff while they are beautifying the roadsides in the community.

Students will be encouraged to bring a filled, reusable water bottle to help keep themselves hydrated. The idea is to stress the reuse of bottles to get away from using the single-use plastic bottles, Mosey noted.

Residents living in and around Colfax are invited and encouraged to take part in Colfax Beautification Day, too, he said.

If everyone picks up a little bit of trash in his or her neighborhood, the combined effort can have a big impact.

Students in Global Science who helped organize the 2nd Annual Colfax Beautification Day are Amanda Christianson, Mitch Kiekhafer, McKayla Moore, Chris Scharlau, McKenna Yingst, Nate and Nick Charbonneau, Levi Edgemon, Richard Stehling, Andrew Schneider, Jackson Harvey, Tamara Huffman, Jesse Anderson, Taylor Severson, Joe Hayton and Dalton Schotter.
