ARKANSAW — Finally, after weeks of practice, the weather relented albeit briefly, for the Colfax softball team to play its official 2018 season opener here last Thursday.
Traveling south April 12, Colfax took on the Durand Panthers, who hold their home games in the shadow of the former Arkansaw High School, which merged with the Durand District in 1992.
The Lady Vikings pushed the Panthers to the full seven innings but fell short, losing the regular season and conference opener 11-2.
Durand roughed up Colfax starting pitcher Jozie Buchanan. The Panthers collected eight hits, three walks and eight runs off the Vikings’ sophomore hurler to lead 8-1 after three innings of play.
Senior Tamara Huffman came on in relief in the fourth and did not surrender a hit but allowed eight walks which Durand turned into three more runs – two in the bottom of the fourth and another in the sixth frame.
Buchanan, who took the loss, and Huffman both registered three strikeouts in three innings of work.
Huffman led the Vikings’ offense with three hits in four plate appearances including an RBI and a double. Taylor Irwin finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Kameri Meredith also picked up a pair of hits in four attempts.
Freshman Bailey Bradford and senior Makayla Mattson each had a hit for Colfax who out slugged Durand, 9-8.
Durand took a 3-0 lead with a single run in the first and two more in the second frame.
Colfax got on the scoreboard in the top of the third when Taylor Irwin lead off with a double and scored on the next atbat when Huffman singled her home to cut its deficit to two runs.
Unfortunately, the Panthers took control of the contest in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs on four singles and a double which chased Buchanan from the mound.
The Lady Vikings took a run back in the top of the fourth. Buchanan walked with one out and came in to score on single by Taylor Irwin.
Durand, however, scored three more runs for the 11-2 final.
Colfax is now 0-1 in conference and overall play while Durand is 1-0.
Pepin/Alma and Spring Valley are the only other Dunn-St. Croix teams to get in a softball game to date. The Eagles blanked the Cardinals 16-0 in a three-inning game played in Pepin last Thursday.
As of Monday afternoon’s press time, the Vikings’ softballers were still slated to travel to Elk Mound on Thursday and Glenwood City on Friday.
