While the weather outside may have been cold, the Colfax Track and Field squads stayed warm and dry as they opened their 2018 campaign indoors with meets at UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout last month.
[emember_protected] The Viking tracksters opened the season competing in the Tomahawk Indoor Invitational held March 16 at UW-Eau Claire’s McPhee Center. The Colfax girls took ninth out of ten teams with 34 points while the boys finished 11th in as many teams with 21 points.
Eight days later, the squads traveled to UW-Stout for the Northern Badger Classic held last Saturday, March 24 inside the Johnson Fieldhouse. In a very large and competitive field, the Colfax ladies came in 22 out of 23 teams after posting just three points. The boys also scored three points and placed in a three-way tie for 23rd with Fall Creek and Cameron.
Northern Badger Classic
Two of the Lady Vikings’ three team points in the Northern Badger Classic came via sophomore Kameri Meredith’s seventh-place finish in the 200 meter dash where she ran a :29.60. Meredith also finished 11th in the long jump (14’) and 15th in the 55 meter dash.
Fellow sophomore Morgan Schleusner scored the girls’ other team point by finishing the 400 meter run in 1:07.26 to place eighth. Schleusner also placed 14th in the 55 meter competition.
Colfax’s only other top ten finish for the girls was provided by senior Mackenzie Jensen, who took tenth in the 1,600 meter run in a time of 6:23.95.
On the boys’ side, junior Trevor Rothbauer jumped 37’ even in the triple jump to secure a sixth-place finish and the team’s only three points.
The Colfax boys’ 4×400 meter relay team took 13th, sophomore Ed Hydukovich finished 16th in the 400 meters (:58.67), Dennan Fogarty, a junior, placed 19th in the 200 meter run (:25.92), and sophomore Brady Lawrence and freshman Noah Heidorn each placed 20th in the 1,600 meter run and long jump respectively.
Tomahawk Indoor Invite
Colfax kicked off a new season of track and field March 16 at Tomahawk Indoor Invitational held inside UW-Eau Claire’s McPhee Center.
The Colfax girls’ team tallied 34 points to finish ninth in the 10-team standings while the boys finished last out of 11 teams with 21 points.
Erica Kallstrom’s third-place finish in the 3,200 meters was tops among the Colfax girls. The junior finished the race in 13:57.14.
Classmate Emma Hurlburt finished fourth in the shot put (32’ 5”) while Morgan Schleusner took fifth in the 55 meter dash (:08.27), Kameri Meredith finished seventh in the long jump (14’ 2”) and Morgan Jenson, a sophomore, took eighth in the shot put (28’ 6”).
The ladies 2×200 m and 4×800 m relay teams placed second and sixth respectively.
Junior Luke Heidron had the Viking boys best finished as he matched Erica Kallstrom bronze-medal finish, taking third in the long jump with a leap of 18’ even. Heidorn also placed 15th in the 55 meter dash.
Fellow juniors Trevor Rothbauer and Jeremy Artist both took home fourth place finishes. Rothbauer triple jumped 37’ 6.5” while Artist ran a :07.14 in the 55 meters and finished 13th in the 200 meters race.
Ed Hydukovich took a sixth in the 400 meter run (:59.59) and Brady Lawrence was seventh in the 1,600 meter run (5:35.76).
The Vikings are scheduled to run outdoors, weather permitting, at St. Croix Central tomorrow (Thursday, April 5) and will be in Mondovi the following Thursday, April 12. [/emember_protected]
