COLFAX  — With 13 players returning to the baseball team this spring, Coach Kirk Secraw says he sees the Colfax High School team as being “middle of the pack.”

In the 2017 season, the Colfax baseball team had a Dunn-St.Croix Conference record of 0-11 with an overall record of 1-14.

[emember_protected] Colfax’s only win last year was over Glenwood City, 8-6, in a game played May 20, 2017.

The Colfax team lost to Boyceville in the opening round of the 2017 regionals with a score of 5-3.

Coach Secraw, who is entering his third season as head coach, noted that five letterwinners are returning from last year, and four letterwinners have been lost.

Seniors who graduated in 2017 were Kamdon Quast and Tyler Snyder.

Returning letterwinners are Nate Polden (pitcher/infield); Taylor Sarauer (first base/designated hitter); Chris Scharlau (infield/pitcher); Mitch Harmon (catcher/infield); and Nick Jenson (third base/infield).

Other returning players include Brett Schindler (pitcher/infield); Mitch Kiekhafer (utility); Tommy Anderson (pitcher/infield); Dalton Schotter (pitcher/outfield); Marcus Drees (catcher/outfield); Cole Kiekhafer (pitcher/outfield); Zac Rindy (pitcher/infield); and Dan Zons (outfield).

Newcomers to the Colfax baseball team are Durran Pederson (pitcher/infield); Caden Erickson (pitcher/infield); Drew Gibson (pitcher/infield); and Devan Olson (pitcher/outfield).

The philosophy for this year is to “play smart” and keep the pitch counts down, have fewer defensive errors and to put the ball in play on offense, Coach Secraw said.

Regarding the Dunn-St.Croix Conference, Durand and Elk Mound are at the top, he said.

“They are always tough, and then there’s everybody else, including us,” Coach Secraw said.

Team goals for the season are to finish .500 or better, compete in every game, and to win a regional game, he said.

“Mitch Harmon was our co-MVP with Nate Polden, so I hope to see them to continue to grow. Mitch Kiekhafer missed all of last season, but I see him as having a great year,” Coach Secraw said.

In view of the pitch count rule, “everybody’s a pitcher,” but the main pitchers for this season are Nate Polden, Mitch Kiekhafer, Brett Schindler and Nick Jenson, he said.

The roster for the Colfax High School baseball team this spring includes Caden Erickson (pitcher/infield, freshman); Drew Gibson (pitcher/infield, freshman); Mitch Kiekhafer (P/INF, senior); Nate Polden (P/INF, senior); Cole Kiekhafer (OF, sophomore); Devan Olson (pitcher/outfield, freshman); Durran Pederson (pitcher/infield, freshman); Zac Rindy (1B, sophomore); Brett Schindler (P/INF, senior); Tommy Anderson (P/OF, junior); Chris Scharlau (P/INF, junior); Nick Jenson (P/3B, sophomore); Marcus Drees (C/INF, sophomore); Mitch Harmon (C/INF/P); Taylor Sarauer (1B/DH); Dan Zons (OF, sophomore). [/emember_protected]
