Bulldog track teams open season indoors

By Missy Klatt

MENOMONIE — The Bulldog track team opened their season with a couple of indoor meets in Menomonie, first at the Dunn County Indoor meet on Thursday, March 22nd and then on Saturday, March 24th at the Northern Badger Classic held at the Johnson Fieldhouse at UW-Stout.

The Dawgs first meet on Thursday was a small one but against bigger schools. The Girls competed against Menomonie, Ellsworth and Rice Lake while the Boys only had Menomonie and Ellsworth as opponents.

[emember_protected] It was the pole vaulters who really shone for the Bulldogs with Brandon Kenefick setting a new personal best record with a vault of 12’9’ to win the event and Megan Hintzman, who won the girls’ pole vault with a height of 8’. Coach Day stated “these two put in the time this summer and it’s already paid off in the first meet.”

Day also credits the girl throwers for putting in time this summer, saying “we saw some good competition and we had a few nice marks but I would expect some great improvement in the next few meets.” Haley Wold who threw for 30’1” in the shot put competition and placing sixth was the Lady Dawgs top thrower.

Overall Coach Day stated that “I was very happy with our effort. Many of the younger athletes needed to get their feet wet. It seemed like they performed better as the meet went on getting rid of those jitters or realizing what it is going to take to compete.”

With twenty-five teams competing in the small school division on Saturday the Bulldogs saw a lot of good competition. Coach Day said “I am always looking for small improvements or adjustments to improve our performance, and we had lots of improved marks from Menomonie HS indoor. We did not have many place in the top eight, but that result is not what I am interested in right now. It is a process of improving and we are doing that.”

Once again pole vaulters, Brandon Kenefick and Megan Hintzman were the top Bulldog performers. Kenefick had a vault of 12’ for second and Hintzman was also second with a jump of 8’6”.

The Bulldogs travel to St. Croix Central on Tuesday, April 10th for their first outdoor meet.
