Matthew Bauman from Glenwood City DECA qualifies for international competition to be held in Atlanta

Glenwood City High School had seven DECA members compete at the three-day State DECA Competition March 5th-7th at the Lake Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva, WI.

The DECA members competing were Matthew Bauman, Lane O’meara, Connor Olson, Melina Schultz, Makayla O’Brien, Emma Scholler, and Annika Bauman, accompanied by DECA advisor Melissa Devery. The students qualified for state by competing at the DECA Districts Competition, held January 6 at UW-Stout. Although 7 students competed at state, only Matthew Bauman earned the right to advance to the national competition by placing 6th in his Finance event.

DECA’s competitive events are aligned in the career clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism. These events serve to give students experience in these fields by exposing them to potential real-life business situations, which contributes to helping DECA students become college and career ready. Students competing in DECA events are judged by both a written test or report and an interactive “role play” where an industry professional serves to judge the student on their knowledge of the business situation. In addition to the competition aspect, DECA conventions allow students the opportunity to attend educational networking sessions and to engage in both formal and social events.

(International Qualifier) Matthew Bauman- Finance Series Event-6th Place

Makayla O’Brien- Hotel and Lodging Management Series Event- top 20% role play medal

More than 17,000 high school students, teachers, and business professionals will be in attendance April 21st-24th in Atlanta, GA. Please contact Carrie Hentz at hentzcar@gcsd.k12.wi.us for additional information.
