Bulldog boys battered by Beavers in WIAA D4 tournament opener

CUMBERLAND — Boyceville head boys’ basketball coach Ben Luer knew one thing for certain heading into last week’s regional quarterfinal at Cumberland: his team had to play well.

“We knew we had to play a perfect game to have a chance,” Luer said in written comments a few days later. “They (the Beavers) are a well-rounded team with a really good player.”

The game was not quite what the Bulldogs hoped, as they were handed a 78-45 loss by the region’s number-five seed to end the season. The loss punctuated a season in which Luer expressed pride in his team for never giving up.

[emember_protected] “We had five games decided by less than four points this season,” he explained, “I told the guys that only five teams will be happy at the end of the season, and it’s the teams that hold the championship ball up.”

The Bulldogs trailed by 15 points at halftime, and picked up just 24 more in the second half as the Beavers racked up another 40.

Senior Luke Knudtson led the Boyceville effort with 22 points, Bryce Boda added 15, Jayson Gonzales contributed five, and Brendan Sempf logged two in the contest.

The game’s highest-scoring player was Cumberland’s Kobe Berghammer, who scored 28 points.

The quarterfinal game signifies the loss of seniors Boda, Knudtson, Gonzales, Cooper Boesl and Bryce Larson. Logan Knudtson and Jaden Reisimer will lead next year’s squad in substantive varsity experience, with players like Sempf and Cade Klefstad contributing after picking up some varsity experience this season.

The Bulldogs finished the year 6-16 overall, and were 3-11 in the Dunn-St. Croix.
