Elk Mound man killed in Hwy. 29 crash involving a semi

TOWN OF WHEATON —  A 56-year-old Elk Mound man died Monday morning when he pulled out with his pickup truck in front of semi tractor and trailer westbound on state Highway 29 in the Town of Wheaton.

At about 8 a.m. March 5, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department received a call about a pickup truck and semi collision at the intersection of Highway 29 and 50th Street, according to a news release from the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department.

[emember_protected] The accident investigation determined that the 1996 Dodge pickup truck had stopped on the north side of Highway 29 at the 50th Street intersection and had attempted to cross Highway 29 to continue traveling south.

The driver of the pickup truck failed to yield to the 2016 Mack semi-tractor pulling a trailer headed westbound on Highway 29, according to the news release.

The semi was driven by a 53-year-old man from Rio, Wisconsin, who was not injured in the crash.

The name of the deceased and the name of the semi driver will be released after proper notification of family.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department received assistance in the investigation from the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources along with local fire departments and emergency medical services, according to the news release. [/emember_protected]
