Lady Bulldogs fall to Buffs, preyed upon by Panthers

By Cara L. Dempski

In their second-to-last week of regular-season play, the Boyceville ladies took a pair of road trips to the Dunn-St. Croix’s southernmost members.

The Bulldogs started out their week last Tuesday, February 6 in Mondovi, where they were crushed by the Buffaloes 54-26.

Coach Jolene Bird and the Boyceville girls then took a few days to rest and regroup before trekking to conference co-leader Durand on Friday, February 9.

The Panthers were more than ready for the Lady Bulldogs February 9, handing the visiting Boyceville squad a 64-22 smackdown.

Bird attended a Division 4 seeding meeting February 11, where her team was seeded 11th and will take on the sixth-seeded Grantsburg Pirates in Grantsburg next Tuesday, February 20 to open regional play. The winner of that game will move on to third-seeded Clear Lake February 23.

First, though, the Lady Bulldogs will host Spring Valley February 15 to close the circle on this season’s conference play. The team is currently 2-11 in the Dunn-St. Croix, and is 3-18 overall.

Boyceville seemed to struggle in both halves of their February 6 contest at Mondovi.

This is evident from the online box score indicating the Bulldogs scored just nine points to the Lady Buffs’ 18 in the first half, and 17 to the Buffaloes 36 in the second half. Twenty-seven of the home team’s total score came from senior Haley Poeschel, who provided half of Mondovi’s final score.

Bulldog sophomore Rachel Prestrud provided 10 of Boyceville’s points, Taylor Grambow and Marissa Dormanen contributed four each, Kady Grambow scored three, Amber Retzloff and Tyra Kostman logged two points apiece, and Emma Ouellette put in a free throw for one.

Poeschel’s 27 points gave her the game-leading individual score.

The Bulldogs apparently found last Friday’s contest on Durand’s home court rough going.

Whereas the team fell to the Panthers 77-43 at home January 9, the Panthers pounced to dish out a 64-22 loss to the Boyceville squad just one month later on February 9.

Durand took a 35-11 lead into intermission, and then tacked up another 29 points while holding the Bulldogs to just 11 more in the second half.

Prestrud picked up Boyceville’s highest score with eight points, and Dormanen added another six. Ouellette finished the game with four, and Johnson and Taylor Grambow each added two more.

The game’s highest score belonged to Panther Emily Annis, who earned 20 in the contest.
