Colfax boys cop win over scrappy Boyceville squad

COLFAX — Garrett Maas and the Viking boys’ basketball team were supposed to play two games this week, but instead were forced to play just one.

A Monday snowstorm that dropped a foot of snow on the Colfax area also kept their Elmwood/Plum City game from being played Tuesday, leaving the Vikings with just a Thursday night game against a scrappy Boyceville squad.

“George was hurt with about 2:10 to go in the game,” Maas explained the next day. “I thought that the kids did a tremendous job of staying focused after the long delay, and closing the game out.”

A witness said Scharlau had just slammed in a dunk when he fell to the floor and landed on his hand.

The Vikings trailed for much of the first half before closing the opening period with a scoring run that would give them a 34-22 advantage before the break. The team was outscored by the Bulldogs 29-28 in the second half, but the run was not enough for the visiting team, who won its first Dunn-St. Croix game on Tuesday after beating rival Glenwood City.

Colfax managed to alleviate the influence of Boyceville’s top two players, Bryce Boda and Luke Knudtson (who had 14 and 11 points respectively), while helping Ben Thompson to a game-leading 20 points in the contest. Scharlau also chalked up 18 points for the Vikings before exiting late with the injury.

Sophomore Ed Hydukovich logged nine points in the game, Noah Albricht put up five, Jackson Hellmann added four, and Marcus Reisdorf and Luke Heidorn each contributed three.

The Vikings carried a 6-1 Dunn-St. Croix record into this week, and are 9-4 overall. They hosted Eleva-Strum Monday,January 29 in a non-conference game, and headed to Spring Valley January 30. They will play at Elk Mound this Friday, February 2, and then face Augusta at home next Tuesday, February 6.
