COLFAX — It might not have been the best night for the Blackhawks wrestling team, but last Monday’s dual against Barron held at Colfax High School was a good one for the hometown grapplers.
The Golden Bears got a chance to face the Hawks in Colfax January 15 after the matches were rescheduled from January 11 due to inclement weather. While Barron came out on top 63-18, it was once again a trio of Colfax wrestlers who put points on the scoreboard for the Bloomer/Colfax co-op.
Julio Hernandez was the lone Colfax competitor to take a loss when he was pinned by Golden Bear Cole Hanson in the 113-pound match at the 3:23 mark. Despite being pinned, Hernandez was able to score on Hanson with a takedown, a pair of reversals, and a trio of near falls to total a score of 15 before taking the loss.
Sawyer Best picked up a win for the Hawks over Barron’s Ethan Kobernick at 126 pounds. The Colfax sophomore got the fall on Kobernick at the 4:17 mark after scoring on a pair of a takedowns, a near fall, and reversal.
Mitchel Harmon bested Golden Bear Justin Bartlett at 138 pounds with a fall at 3:17 after both grapplers scored just one takedown apiece. Tommy Anderson rounded out the winning performances when he pinned Tony Candler at 3:37 for six.
The Barron dual was the Bloomer/Colfax squad’s only match last week, and they do not hit the mats again until January 23 at Flambeau. The team will compete in the conference duals at Cumberland this Friday, January 26 before hosting the Heart ‘O North conference tournament in Bloomer on Saturday, February 3.
The regional meet will be held February 10 at Baldwin-Woodville, and the team sectional is scheduled for February 13 at Amery.
