Rural Colfax man killed in Hwy 29 one-vehicle accident

COLFAX —  A rural Colfax man was killed early Saturday morning when the vehicle he was driving left state Highway 29 and rolled down an embankment.

The deceased driver was identified as Michael T. Koenig, age 31.

According to a news release from the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department, the Dunn County E-911 Center received a report at around 2:20 a.m. January 6 of a westbound vehicle that had gone off Highway 29 near the intersection of 906th Street in the Town of Elk Mound.

When deputies arrived at the scene of the accident, they discovered the vehicle had been traveling westbound on Highway 29 and had failed to negotiate a turn in the road.

The vehicle rolled several times going down a steep embankment.

Koenig, who was the lone occupant in the vehicle, was ejected, and evidence at the scene indicates the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the news release.

The Dunn County medical examiner pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

According to the news release, based on the initial investigation, speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors in the fatal crash.

In addition to the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department, the Elk Mound Fire Department, the Colfax Rescue squad and Dunn County First Responders were dispatched to the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department and the Dunn County Medical Examiner’s Office.
