Boyceville ladies fall to state-ranked Cameron team

CAMERON — Bulldog basketball coach Jolene Bird knows she has a young team and that can make competing against larger, more experienced squads difficult and disheartening.

So, she chooses to accentuate the positive.

Take, for instance, the Lady Bulldogs’ 69-35 non-conference shellacking by Cameron last Thursday, December 21. According to the Wissports.net Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Poll, the senior-led Comets are ranked fifth in Division 4 after four weeks of competition.

[emember_protected] That would be a tall order for any team to take on, but Bird seemed happy with how her young team handled the match-up.

“Although we got beat soundly, there were many positives from my team,” she said.

The Boyceville ladies put up 17 points in the first half, despite the Comets dropping in 40 points before halftime. The Lady Bulldogs then put up another 18 in the final half, to trail by 34 points when the final buzzer sounded.

Senior Marissa Dormanen picked up 13 points for the visiting Dogs, and sophomore Rachel Prestrud added nine more. Hannah Johnson scored five, Emma Ouellette, Amber Retzloff and Taylor Grambow had two points apiece, and Alyx Bloom and Ana Evenson each dropped in a free throw for one.

Comet Carli Wanink copped the game’s highest score with 16 points.

Bird and her pack of Bulldogs are taking the holiday break off, but will head right into a non-conference contest January 2 at home against Amery. Boyceville hosts Mondovi for its first Dunn-St. Croix matchup of the new year January 4, and then will welcome Durand January 9.

The Bulldogs are 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the D-SC.
