Colfax boys stave off Spring Valley, stay unbeaten in D-SC

COLFAX — Imagine you are a high school basketball coach about to face a team that is consistently one of the best in the conference, and one of your best players is sick.

That is the situation Colfax boys’ head coach Garret Maas faced last Tuesday, December 12 when his Vikings welcomed the coach Rob Bosshart and his Spring Valley Cardinals to town.

[emember_protected] In the end, Maas need not have worried, because his sick player, George Scharlau, not only held one of the best Cardinal players scoreless, but the Vikings came away with a 51-42 win to move to 2-0 in the Dunn-St. Croix.

“We played our best team defense of the year,” Maas said the following morning. “Our length gave them a lot of issues, and George did an outstanding job, despite being sick, of holding their best player to zero points.”

The Colfax coach said it was not his team’s best shooting performance of the season thus far, but the Vikings found ways to drop in buckets at critical times in the game.

The home team led the contest by four at the half before extending the lead to nine before the final minutes dripped off the clock.

Junior Ben Thompson again led the team in scoring with 20 points after hitting eight field goals and four of seven charity shots. Scharlau still managed to put up 14 points with a pair of inside shots, two threes, and four free throws.

Noah Albricht landed a pair of field goals, including one for three, to score five, Treyton Teige and Luke Heidorn each chalked up four points, Jackson Hellman landed a three-pointer, and Ed Hydukovich scored one from the line.

Spring Valley’s Tyson Kado earned the Cards’ highest score with 15 points.

The Vikings turned their attention to a rivalry game at home against Elk Mound December 15 before hosting Cornell this Thursday, December 21 in a non-conference tilt.
