SIREN — Last year, the Glenwood City boys’ basketball team did not win a game until the third week of the season, and then it was a 65-43 blowout over non-conference foe Clayton.
This year, the Hilltoppers wasted no time adding a W to the record. The squad went to Siren High School November 30, and walked away from the contest with a 53-42 conference win over the Dragons in their season opener.
[emember_protected] It was a fortuitous start for a team that went just 7-17 last year, but stayed alive in the post season with an 86-69 regional quarterfinal win over Colfax before being eliminated from contention in the semi-final game against Stanley-Boyd.
Head coach Tristan Kittilson acknowledged this year’s Toppers have some talented players, and that skill showed up on the hardwood last Thursday evening with three of the six players to get in minutes scored in the double digits.
According to the scorebooks Kittilson sent for the game, the Glenwood City boys had just a three-point lead at halftime, but then chalked up another 26 in the second half while holding the Dragons to just 18 points.
Hadin DeSmith led the Hilltopper climb with 15 points after hitting four field goals – one for three points – and going three for seven from the line. Junior Tanner Davis was not far behind with 13 points after nailing a three-pointer, four field goals, and a pair of charity tosses. Senior Riley Schutz scored 12 on five field goals and two free throws.
Another junior, Dillon Hierlmeier, scored six in the game with a trio of shots, Quinn Taylor dropped in two field goals for four, and Brandyn Hallquist logged two.
The Toppers played Cadott at home Monday, December 4, and head to Spring Valley on Thursday, December 7 for the first Dunn-St. Croix game of the season. They finish the week with a December 9 non-conference matchup at Grantsburg.
Glenwood City will play Mondovi at home on December 12.
