Lady Vikings struggle against Raiders in non-conference tilt

HUDSON — Colfax head girls’ basketball coach Joe Doucette is chalking up last Tuesday’s game at Hudson as another good early-season learning experience for his team.

“We are just not playing very well,” he said the morning after the Lady Vikings fell to the Raiders. “We are really struggling fundamentally, and make so many mistakes passing and catching.”

[emember_protected] The Vikings went to Hudson November 21 as part of an early season Doucette deliberately stacked with difficult teams to test Colfax’s weak spots, and walked away later that evening with a 54-38 loss to fall to 1-2 overall.

While Doucette is pleased to be finding areas in need of improvement, he voiced concern over the list of improvements needed. Still, all is not lost, since he believes he has a very good basketball team on his hands.

He cited the Vikings’ shaky confidence in the face of large, physical teams like Hudson as a major factor in the November 21 loss, but knows the team is capable of rolling up its collective sleeves and getting to work on building that confidence.

“We don’t play for a while, and have a great chance to work on things,” Doucette said. “We need some leadership. We need some of our veterans to show persistence and perseverance instead of hanging their heads.”

Despite the tough start, Doucette believes the early schedule will help the Colfax girls down the road. He and his coaching staff are looking at ways to help the team improve as the season progresses.

Junior Savannah Henricks led the Lady Vikings in scoring with eight points in the contest, while Morgan Schleusner and Emma Hurlburt picked up six points apiece. Jayna Bowe and Rachel Scharlau tied with four each, Josie Steinke again nailed a three-point shot, and Kameri Meredith picked up just one field goal for two points in the game.

Raiders senior Ty Huber took top scoring honors in the game with 14 points.

The Colfax girls are in the middle of a two-week break before they open the Dunn-St. Croix season at Boyceville December 5. They will host their conference home opener against Spring Valley December 8 before hosting Elk Mound the following week on December 14.
