BALDWIN — According to Boyceville head girls’ basketball coach Jolene Bird, the Lady Bulldogs’ lack of varsity experience shown through in their season opener last Thursday.
[emember_protected] The Bulldogs traveled to Baldwin-Woodville November 16 to open their season, and fought a pretty tough team after getting through a rough initial six minutes.
But, those six minutes were a doozy, as the Blackhawks pushed out to a 12-2 lead on the Boyceville squad. Boyceville eventually picked up the pace to play a more confident second half while limiting Baldwin-Woodville’s Brooke Evenson’s scoring opportunities, but still fell to the Lady Hawks 37-28.
“We just didn’t play to the speed or physicality of Baldwin during the beginning of the game,” Bird explained. “Brooke Evenson scored her 18 points all in the first half. During the second half, we held her scoreless by playing faster and more physical.”
Bird said the Bulldogs’ poor outside shooting and free throws also hindered their chances for the win in the end.
Sophomore Rachel Prestrud led the Lady Bulldogs with seven points on the night after sinking a pair of field goals and going three for four from the line. Taylor Grambow following with six points total after shooting a pair of field goals and two charity throws.
Tyra Kostman picked up five points on one two-point shot and a trio of free throws, Marissa Dormanen and Emma Ouellette tied with four points each, and Hannah Johnson dropped in a field goal for two.
Evenson, a junior, reeled in the game’s top-scoring performance with her 18 points.
A game originally scheduled for November 21 against St. Croix Central was rescheduled to January, meaning the Lady Bulldogs will not hit the hardwood again until November 30, when they host Turtle Lake.
Boyceville opens the Dunn-St. Croix season December 5 at home against Boyceville.
