SAND CREEK  —  Kathleen E. Johnson, 69, has been identified as the victim in a residential fire in the Town of Sand Creek November 6.

According to a news release from the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department dated November 9, Johnson was found deceased just inside the doorway of the residence.

The Dunn County 911 Communications Center received a report of a residential fire at a home on 780th Street in the Town of Sand Creek at around 8:20 p.m. Sunday, November 6.

The Dunn County Sheriff’s Department, the Sand Creek fire department, the Colfax fire department, the Colfax Rescue Squad and the Chippewa Fire Protection District all responded to the scene.

Deputies determined that a 69-year-old woman resided alone at the residence, and investigation at the scene revealed the woman was most likely home during the fire, according to a news release from sheriff’s department dated November 7.

Dunn County investigators located a body inside the home believed to be the female resident, and an autopsy was performed later in the day November 7.

In the news release identifying Johnson as the victim, the release noted the cause of death, as determined by autopsy, was carbon monoxide poisoning due to smoke inhalation.

The news release goes on to say the cause of the fire has been determined to have started in the living room of the residence near a wood-burning fireplace.

Because of the extent of the fire damage to the house, the cause of the fire is being listed officially as “undetermined,” according to the news release.
