By Cara L. Dempski

SPRING VALLEY — You almost would not have thought some of the girls on Corey Day’s Lady Bulldogs cross country team were getting over being sick, by the way they ran.

The Boyceville ladies, who are a team of just five, fought through illness recovery to take third place out of five teams at the Spring Valley cross country meet held September 28 after scoring 96 points. The boys’ team was sixth out of six at the same meet, but saw a pair of underclassmen run two good races.

Senior Emily Voelker again led the girls’ team to the finish, taking 12th place overall with a time of 23:48.7. Naomi Hillman, a sophomore, was less than a minute behind Voelker, and placed 16th out of a field of 45 with her 24:15.8 race.

Another 10th-grade runner, Noelle Wheeldon, picked up her best time of the year in the race, with a 26:56.9 finish to take 31st overall. Seniors Marissa Dormanen and Lauryn Dominick were 33rd and 34th respectively after running races of 27:23.1 and 27:24.7.

Elmwood’s Kassye Todd continued her successful senior season with a 20:55.5 finish and the individual race win. Glenwood City’s girls copped the team win with 22 points after their top five runners finished in the top 10.

Freshman Nathan Corr again led the Boyceville boys’ in the September 28 race, finishing in ninth place with a time of 19:16.8. Sophomore Steven Rasmussen finished in under 20 minutes for the first time this season, running a 19:52.1 race for 13th.

Rian Corr was the third Bulldog boy to cross the finish line at Spring Valley, taking 30th with his 21:05.8 race. Cade Klefstad and Ryker Ferg finished the team’s top five with placings of 35th and 36th and times of 21:39.6 and 21:39.7.

Nathaniel Chich bested twin brother Samuel with a 22:31.1 race for 40th, while Samuel finished in 41st with a 22:33.1 run.

Seniors Emmett Kapsner and Sean Best, and juniors Justin Lombardo and Brennan Wheeldon also competed in the race.

Durand junior Isaac Wegner won the boys’ race in 17:38.1, and was one of five Panthers in the top six. The Durand squad won the boys’ team trophy with just 17 points.

The Boyceville cross country teams ran at Amery October 3, and will compete in Arcadia this Saturday, October 7 before turning their attention to the Dunn-St. Croix Conference meet to be held at the Whitetail Golf Course near Colfax next Thursday, October 12 .
