Bulldog CC struggle at Rice Lake, Chieftain Invitationals

There are few people who truly enjoy heavy activity outdoors during the heat and humidity of a late summer day. The sun and moisture drain most people of what energy they have.

Yet there are teenagers who will go outdoors and run five kilometers in exactly that kind of weather in the hopes of finishing high in the rankings.

[emember_protected] That is precisely what the weather was like the evening of September 12 when the Boyceville boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed at the Rice Lake Cross Country Invitational. The ladies took ninth out of 12 teams after scoring 212, while the boys were 12th out of 13 with 264 points.

The Bulldogs’ trip to the Chieftain Invitational in Osceola Saturday, September 16 featured similar weather. The girls’ team finished ninth out of nine after putting together 212 points, while the boys’ team was 10th out of 10 after finishing with 258 points.

Boyceville ran a race on a Dunn-St. Croix course in Mondovi September 18 before heading to Durand September 21. The Bulldogs will run at the Whitetail Golf and Supper Club for a Colfax-hosted race next Monday, September 25.

Rice Lake

The Lady Bulldogs’ scraped together 212 points to best three other teams and finish ninth out of 12 at the Rice Lake Invitational, while the boys’ put together 264 to take 12th out of 13.

Emily Voelker led the Lady Bulldogs to the finish line with a time of 23:28.5 for 20th, while sophomore Naomi Hillman finished in 33rd with a time of 24:36.2. Another senior, Lauryn Dominic, ran a 25:55.5 race to take 45th overall.

Marissa Dormanen and Noelle Wheeldon rounded out the Bulldogs’ girls’ team with times of 27:41.5 and 28:32.4 for 61st and 68th placings.

Dunn-St. Croix conference foe Glenwood City nabbed the top girls’ team spot with just 63 points on the night, while Bloomer’s Emily Freagon copped the race win with a time of 20:40.3.

The Boyceville boys’ team was led by freshman Nathan Corr, who finished in 20:13.2 to take 40th. Corr’s older brother, Rian, finished 44th after his 20:18.4 effort, and sophomore Steven Rasmussen was 50th with a time of 20:37.5.

Freshmen Cade Klefstad, Samuel Chich and Nathaniel Chich were 71st, 74th and 80th after finishing in 22:25.4, 22:36.8 and 23:31.8 respectively. Ryker Ferg completed the team, finishing 90th with a time of 32:51.8.

Isaac Bohaty of McDonell Central won the boys’ individual race with a time of 17:18.2, assisting his team to a first-place finish with just 49 points.

Chieftain Invitational

Saturday’s Chieftain Invitational at Osceola was a tough day for the Bulldog cross country teams, with the girls’ finishing ninth out of nine, and the boys’ going 10th out of 10.

Emily Voelker again led the Lady Bulldogs to the finish in the September 16 meet, taking 31st with a time of 24:45.51. Sophomore Naomi Hillman followed her in, finishing in 25:41.99 to take 44th. Lauryn Dominick took 56th with her 27:16.71 race, Noelle Wheeldon was 63rd after racing to a 27:40.85 finish, and Marissa Dormanen ran a 27:53.54 race for 67th.

Osceola freshman Lauren Ellefson won the individual girls’ race with a time of 21:44.07, while Minnehaha Academy took home the girls’ team trophy after accruing just 49 points.

Freshman Nathan Corr led the boys’ team to the finish line with a time of 20:22.54 to take 39th. Steven Rasmussen was the second Bulldog to finish, racing to 55th with a time of 21:15.59. Cade Klefstad took 80th with a time of 22:37.56, Nathaniel Chich ran a 23:49.92 race for 97th, and Samuel Chich was 98th after a 23:53.25 race.

Sean Best and Emmett Kapsner were the final two boys’ runners scored for the race. Best finished in 24:47.43 for 111th, and Kapsner was 116th after finishing in 25:56.67. Justin Lombardo and Brennan Wheeldon also ran in the September 16 race.

Peter Weber of Minnehaha Academy won the individual race in 17:54.27 to help the Redhawks to a team win with just 41 points.
