By Cara L. Dempski

BOYCEVILLE — If Boyceville cross country coach Corey Day was hoping to learn more about his two teams of unknown factors, he got a nice lesson last week at home to open the 2017 season.

The Bulldogs boys’ and girls’ teams ran as part of the Boyceville Cross Country Alumni Invitational held Thursday, August 24 at Tiffany Creek Elementary. It was perfect running weather, cool with a light breeze, sunshine and the teams held their own on their home course.

The girls’ team finished with 211 points to take eighth out of 11, and the boys’ earned 10th out of 14 teams with 216 points.

Senior Emily Voelker, who is in just her second year of cross country competition, led the Lady Bulldogs to the finish line with a time of 24:19 to take 23rd overall. Her classmate, Lauryn Dominic, finished in 47th with a time of 25:48.3.

Naomi Hillman crossed the line in 28:04.5 to take 71st, and Marissa Dormanen was 77th with her 28:27.4 race. Noelle Wheeldon finished off the team with her 30:00.2 effort to take 84th place.

Glenwood City’s girls took home the team trophy with a score of 39 after its first five runners finished in the top 20. Elmwood/Plum City senior Kassye Todd won the individual race with a time of 22:06.3.

Freshman runner Nathan Corr crossed the line seven seconds ahead of his older brother Rian in the Thursday race. He took 31st with a time of 20:09.1, while Rian finished in 35th with a time of 20:16.4. Steven Rasmussen and Cade Klefstad finished in 21:20.3 and 21:21.1 to take 58th and 59th placings.

Ryker Ferg raced to a 21:52.2 finish to take 71st, and Samuel Chich and Nathaniel Chich rounded out the scoring runners with times of 23:12.5 and 24:19.8 for 90th and 103 places. Emmett Kapsner took 106th for his 24:29.7 race, and senior newcomer Brandon Kenefick finished in 126th 26:28. Justin Lombardo took 132nd for his 27:35.2 race, and Casey Owen was 142nd after finishing in 31:07.6.

Durand took top boys’ team honors with just 21 points as it had five runners finish in the top ten. Panther senior Wesley Brantner won the boys’ individual race in a time of 17:51.5.
