Mound View Elementary awarded Title I School of Recognition

ELK MOUND — Parents of elementary students in the Elk Mound school district have one more reason to be proud of their school.

The staff and administration at Mound View Elementary were notified April 18 that the state Department of Public Instruction was recognizing the school as a 2016-2017 Wisconsin Title I School of Recognition for High-Progress.

School principal Eric Hanson said the honor was determined from nearly 27 point improvement in reading scores between 2013-2014 and 2015-2016. The students scored 64.4 out of 100 in reading levels on the FORWARD exam in 2013-2014, and were at 91.1 out of 100 two years later.

In order to attain the honor, a school must fall within the top 10 percent of schools experiencing student growth in reading and mathematics for elementary school students. Schools must also have achievement gaps that are less than three percentage points between student groups and their state comparison groups, or show evidence of reducing gaps greater than three percentage points.

Hanson expressed pride in the students, staff and community for the support of the children studying at Mound View.

“We certainly don’t work here to win awards, but I am glad to be recognized for the achievement,” Hanson explained.

The elementary school principal said a team of professionals working together to create interventions for students has proven successful in raising the reading achievement score and making sure no students fall behind.

The school will be recognized in a May 1 ceremony at the State Capitol in Madison.
