Colfax track and field takes to the outdoors at Hammond

By Cara L. Dempski

HAMMOND — The skies were sunny, but the Viking track and field team still had to contend with cold air and breezy conditions in their first outdoor meet of 2017.

“The cold weather makes most everything a little more difficult,” head coach Ryan Krall said. “That was certainly the case tonight. The kids can use these nights as great learning opportunities, helping them figure out how important proper warm-up is to competing at a high level.”

The Vikings continue to nurse a few lingering injuries, but there are some pieces falling into place in the early season that give Krall and his coaching staff reason to be excited as the weather warms and the season progresses.

One of those pieces is Morgan Schleusner. The freshman, described by Krall as a naturally gifted athlete, won the girls’ 300m hurdles in her first attempt. She raced to a 54.10 finish in the event to earn the Vikings’ only first-place finish of the evening.

The ladies’ 800m relay reeled in six points with their third-place finish. The team ran a 1:56.93 race, which put them nearly two seconds behind first-place St. Croix Falls. The 400m relay team also placed third with a time of 55.30. The Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks claimed first place in that race.

Senior Abbagail Schotter tacked up five points with her fourth-place finish in the 800m run. She was bested by Ellsworth’s Julia Van Watermuelen, who finished in 2:37.22 to take first.

Freshman jumper Jayna Bowe has improved at a startling pace this season. She took second place in long jump with a 15-05.25 distance, and was only five inches behind Boyceville senior Cassie Malean.

The girls’ team trophy went to home team St. Croix Central, who racked up 125 points over the course of the evening.

Sprinter Jeremy Artist picked up the first team points for the Colfax boys when he finished fourth in the 100m dash with his 11.85 race. Baldwin-Woodville’s Jade Northrup took the win, clocking a speed of 11.14.

Senior Matthew Reisdorf chalked up another three team points when he finished the mile in 5:26.38 for sixth place. Prescott’s Phillip Pena took first with his 4:59.01 race.

The Viking boys raced to third place in the 800m relay on a 1:42.77 finish. Elk Mound was only six seconds ahead to take first place in the event.

The Mounder boys took home first-place honors with 129 points at the meet.

Colfax is now on a break until heading to Elmwood April 18. They will host their first home meet April 20.
