Boyceville girls’ hold their own at Blue Devil Indoor Invitational

By Cara L. Dempski

MENOMONIE — The Boyceville boys were not able to pick up any points, but the girls earned 17th out of 24 teams at their final indoor track and field meet of 2017.

The Bulldogs traveled to Menomonie for the third time in less than seven days, and made a strong showing against a mixed blend of Division 1 and 2 schools. Head coach Corey Day seemed pleased with how his team handled the meet.

“It was very competitive,” he said. “Cassie Malean had a spectacular night in the high jump with some stiff competition.”

The senior jumper cleared 5-02 in the event to take fourth place and earn five points for the girls’ team. Day said Malean narrowly missed the previous meet record of 5-04, which was broken at the March 28 meet with a 5-08 jump from Maddy Bremer of Prior Lake, Minnesota.

The Boyceville girls’ 1600m relay finished in 4:42.25, but was just out of the points due to being a little over two seconds behind eighth-place Bloomer.

The first place girls’ team was the Hudson Raiders, who recorded 84 points over the course of the evening.

Brandon Kenefick had the highest finish of the boys’ team when he placed 10th in the pole vault with a 10-foot vault. He tied with Menomonie’s Shawn Halverson, Nathan Lucas of Lincoln High School, Gunnar Leary from Eau Claire Memorial, and Chippewa Falls Cardinal Cade Meyer. Elk Mound senior Chandler Schreiber copped first with his 12-foot vault.

The boys’ team from Prior Lake took home first place after nabbing 87 points.

Coach Day said his team ran well on the track, but struggled in vaults and the horizontal jump events.

“We have not put a lot of practice into those things, so I expect we will improve,” Day indicated. “Last night (March 28) was a good learning experience.”

The Bulldogs will head to St. Croix Central tomorrow (April 6) for their first outdoor meet this season. Boyceville will have two weeks off before traveling to Colfax April 20.
