Bulldog tracksters jump into season with scrimmage at St. Croix Central, meets at Menomonie H.S. and UW-Stout

By Cara L. Dempski

Coach Corey Day took eight competitors to a two-event scrimmage to kick off the Boyceville team’s track and field season.

Bulldog jumpers and vaulters on both the boys’ and girls’ teams traveled to St. Croix Central on March 16 to take part in the events. Of the eight athletes who went to the scrimmage, three earned top-three honors. Day said he was glad for the chance to get an early look at his athletes before starting competition in earnest the next week.

Boyceville traveled to Menomonie High School March 23 for a meet-up with Colfax, Elk Mound, Menomonie, and Ellsworth. This time, the runners had a chance to shine, and they did so in good fashion, with a handful of top-10 finishes on both teams.

They then headed to UW-Stout’s Johnson Fieldhouse on March 25 for the 2017 Northern Badger Indoor Invitational. Both teams held their own, with the girls taking ninth place out of 26, and the boys placing 12th out of 26.

Day and his team ran another meet at UW-Stout on March 28 before taking a break to prepare for their appearance April 6 at the St. Croix Central Invitational.

St. Croix Central

Boyceville’s head track coach said he was happy to see his vaulters and high jumpers before they start competing at meets.

“It was nice that they (St. Croix Central) have this new facility and gave our kids an opportunity to get better,” Day explained.

The Bulldogs traveled to the scrimmage at St. Croix Central with only eight athletes, and walked away with a first-place finish for Cassie Malean’s five foot, one inch high jump, a second-place finish for senior Tyler Krueger’s 12-foot vault attempt, and a third place for Brooklyn Booth, who cleared eight feet as a pole vaulter.
