Glenwood City boys’ beaten badly by Colfax

COLFAX — There was a stark contrast between the Hilltoppers’ boys’ basketball team that beat Boyceville on February 14 and the one that showed up in Colfax a few nights later.

Head coach Tristan Kittilson perhaps put it best: “It just wasn’t our night. We didn’t have it going.”

The Toppers, who had won three of its previous four including a thrilling 53-52 win over rival Boyceville Tuesday night, dropped to 4-9 in the Dunn-St. Croix after losing their contest at Colfax High School by a score of 62-42. Glenwood City, now 6-15 overall, will play their final conference game and regular season game this Thursday, February 23 in Elk Mound against the D-SC leading Mounders.

Glenwood City will face Colfax a third time this season when it hosts the Vikings in the opening round game of the WIAA Division 4 boys’ tournament next Tuesday, February 28.

Kittilson complimented the Vikings team, saying “We’ve got to tip our hat to Colfax; they played a really good, physical, hard game, and we didn’t.”

The Glenwood City coach noted the post season is approaching rapidly, and the team needs to be ready. He seemed disappointed the Hilltoppers did not show up at Colfax to play and said it was a tough game, and loss, for the team.

Glenwood City was outscored by 13 points in the opening 18 minutes of play in Colfax and trailed the Vikings, who had won just one conference game prior to last Friday’s game, 33-20 at the intermission.

It did not get much better in the second half as Colfax once again outscored Glenwood City to push its winning margin to 20 points. The Hilltoppers had won the pair’s first meeting back on January 12 by a 74-61 count.

Sophomore Dillon Hierlmeier grabbed Glenwood’s highest point total with 16 points, Riley Schutz accounted for eight, Quinn Taylor scored seven, Tanner Davis picked up five, Hadin DeSmith earned four, and Allen Croes and Dan Loring each scored one point.

Colfax’s Jacob Larson took credit for the highest point total of the game with 23 points.
