AMERY — The Bloomer/Colfax Blackhawks took a trio of wrestlers to the WIAA Division 2 individual sectional meet at Amery High School last Saturday, and saw two of them, both Colfax athletes, qualify for this week’s WIAA State Individual Wrestling Championships in Madison with second place finishes.
Colfax wrestlers Mitchel Harmon and Cole Anderson-Olson moved on to the big stage and will both compete in Thursday evening’s Division 2 preliminaries at the Kohl Center. The squad’s third sectional competitor, Bloomer’s Collin Bungartz, did not qualify.
Harmon earned his trip to Madison in the 132-pound division in his first year as a high school wrestler. The freshman pinned Somerset’s Jacob Grahovac in the quarterfinal and did the same to Jacob Summers of Melrose-Mindoro/Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau in the semifinal.
The 132-pound Colfax grappler, however, was pinned by Ellsworth’s Sam Stuhl in the championship match. In a wrestleback against Calen Kirkpatrick of Northwestern, Harmon held on to claim the sectional silver medal with 10-5 decision.
Like Harmon, Cole Anderson-Olson breezed through his quarter- and semifinal matches at 182 pounds, beating Dakota Schultz of Luck/Frederic/Grantsburg/Siren and Landon Lockington from Melrose-Mindoro/Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau on falls.
Jacob Sigler of Ellsworth beat Anderson-Olson in the first-place match with a pin at 4:00. With no wrestleback by rule, Anderson-Olson, who had already beat third-place finisher Dakota Schultz, copped second and a state berth.
Bloomer wrestler Collin Bungartz beat Osceola’s Logan Johnson in the quarterfinal match at 152, earning a fall of the Chieftain grappler at 5:20. He then wrestled Chase Schmidt of Rice Lake in the semifinal, and was bested on a 8-3 decision. Bungartz then lost to Jeff Maynard of Melrose-Mindoro/Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau by pin at 4:22 in the consolation semifinals and was eliminated.
The Blackhawk wrestling duo will head to Madison to compete in the individual tournament, which runs Thursday, February 23 through Saturday, February 25.
In the state prelims, Harmon (26-8) will grapple Abraham Sell, a 43-3 junior from Chilton/Hilbert at 132 pounds while Anderson-Olson will open have his 182-pound state debut against Jimmy DuVal (41-7) , a junior from Whitewater.
The Ellsworth Panthers took top team honors at the Amery Sectional, scoring 204 points. Melrose-Mindoro/Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau was a distant second with 93.5 points followed by Spencer/Columbus Catholic (71), Prescott (49) and Medford (44) to round out the top five. Amery took sixth with 42 points and Bloomer/Colfax tied Rice Lake for seventh with 38 points.
