Hilltopper boys lose at home to Elk Mound

GLENWOOD CITY — The Glenwood City boys’ basketball squad keeps running up reasonable scores and providing good defense, but it just cannot seem to lift itself past its opponents.

It is a tough pill to swallow for a team with the talent and abilities the Hilltoppers regularly display against their opponents. The team’s 68-46 loss to Elk Mound at Glenwood City on January 20 showed flashes of inspiration, and head coach Tristan Kittilson said he reminded the team repeatedly of how quickly it could turn the game around.

“It seemed like the whole game I was telling them we were just two plays away from bringing it back and really making a game out of it,” Kittilson explained. “It just didn’t happen.”

The Hilltopper coach also said the team got off to a slow start and just could not get back into the game. Glenwood City trailed Elk Mound by 15 points at halftime, having scored only 21 points to the Mounders’ 36 in the opening 18 minutes of the game.

Junior Riley Schutz led the Hilltopper charge with 10 points in the first half and 12 more in the second for a game-high 22 points overall. Dillon Hierlmeier halved Schutz’s score with 11 points of his own after sinking a field goal, a pair of threes and a trio of free shots.

Allen Croes earned seven of the Hilltoppers’ total 46, Tanner Davis picked up another four with a pair of field goals, and Quinn Taylor nabbed two points.

Elk Mound’s leading scorer was Ben Lambele, who earned 17 points against the Hilltoppers.

Glenwood City traveled to Boyceville this past Monday evening, January 23 for a match-up against the Bulldogs that had originally been scheduled for January 17. The Toppers then went to Plum City for a contest against the Wolves on January 26 before heading north to Grantsburg for a January 28 non-conference game. The Glenwood City squad will then have a short break prior to its February 3 away game in Spring Valley.
