MONDOVI — For a second consecutive week, the Elk Mound girls’ basketball squad got an extra day off on account of the weather.
And for the second week in a row, it did not stop them from smashing their opposition while on the road.
The Mounders went to Mondovi for a meeting with the Lady Buffaloes last Thursday, January 19, and came away with a lopsided 70-33 win despite a shaky start.
The victory lifted the team to 5-1 in the Dunn-St. Croix as it stared down a road game against 6-0 Durand last evening, January 24. The outcome of that game could well determine if the Mounders can hold on to their conference crown for a second straight season.
Elk Mound did not appear to be too upset that its January 17 game against rival Colfax, which had already been rescheduled from December 16, had to be postponed yet again due to slippery road conditions as it afforded the Mounders some extra rest. Maybe a little too much as Coach Jordan Kongshaug said the Mounders got off to a slow start, but was pleased with the outcome.
“I really appreciated the contributions from all 12 of our players,” Kongshaug said. “We just need to keep playing with good energy as we have some challenging games coming up.”
The Mounders’ defense appeared to severely limit Buffalo Haley Poeschel’s shooting, holding her to just 12 points in the game, while Elk Mound’s Morgan Radtke rolled to a game-high 20-point finish. Allie Weber nailed four three-point shots and a pair of free throws for 14 points.
Senior Elizabeth Fasbender contributed 10 points to the final score, Kami King reeled in seven, Ashley Gunderson-Morris scored five, Gracie Peterson and Megan Krall tied with four points each. Madysen Borofka, Riley Radtke and Kaitlyn Baier all scored two points apiece.
Poeschel was Mondovi’s highest-scoring player.
The January 24 trip to Durand was the second time Elk Mound has faced the Panthers this season. The first meeting between the two teams in Elk Mound ended with the Panthers on the top of a 47-38 score. The Mounders will play a home contest against Boyceville this Friday before heading to Hammond for a non-conference game against St. Croix Central on January 31.
