Mounder boys take to road, throttle Toppers

GLENWOOD CITY — The Elk Mound boys’ basketball team stayed hot on the tails of Dunn-St. Croix leader Spring Valley after crushing the Glenwood City squad in the season’s first contest between the Mounders and Hilltoppers.
Elk Mound traveled to the Glenwood City last Friday, January 20 and left later that evening victorious following a 68-46 thrashing. The Mounders started tacking points on the scoreboard right from the outset.
“The kids played hard,” head coach Mike Kessler said. “We got some great contributions from a number of our guys on both ends of the floor.”
The Mounders played to a 15-point lead at the half with senior Chandler Schreiber leading the initial effort. The upperclassman picked up 11 points in the first half on his way to a total of 14. Junior Ben Lambele led scoring with 17 total. He earned eight points in the first half with four field goals, and picked up another four field goals and a free shot in the second half for another nine points.
Dane Lew trailed Schreiber’s individual score by three after putting together a field goal and a trio of outside shots for three points each. His final tally was 11 points.
Dylan Black contributed eight points, Jameson Rubenzer and Ryan Mohr each logged six points. Brandon Redwine dropped in a pair of field goals for four points, and Noah Zurbuchen added two points of his own.
Glenwood City’s Riley Schutz took top scoring honors for the game, drilling in nine field goals, a three-pointer, and a charity shot for 22 points.
The Mounders improved to 5-1 in the D-SC, just a half game behind 5-0 Spring Valley who was idle. They will welcome Mondovi this Thursday, January 26 before taking to the road to meet the Cardinals in Spring Valley on January 30 and the Vikings at Colfax on January 31.
