MONDOVI — The Colfax boys’ basketball team has been playing more and more often as a cohesive team in recent weeks. Head coach Garrett Maas said he was impressed with how the team was starting to play together.
The Vikings sailed to Mondovi for a match-up with the Buffaloes last Friday, January 20 looking for a victory but came up short, losing for the fourth time in the past six games, 58-47 to the team in blue. The loss dropped the Vikings to 1-5 in the Dunn-St. Croix and 4-9 overall.
Maas said he was happy with the team’s seven-point deficit at the half, but Colfax struggled to close the gap and overcome the Buffaloes in the final 18 minutes.
“We kept the game around the five- to eight-point margin most of the second half, and we just couldn’t get over the hump,” Maas explained.
The coach said the Vikings had plenty of shooting opportunities, but could not get shots to fall. He noted he was impressed Colfax carried only a single-digit deficit into the halftime break considering two of his starters were in foul trouble during most of the first half.
Senior Jacob Larson led the Colfax offense with 15 points earned over five field goals and five free throws. His classmate, Aliymu Davis, scored 11 points before fouling out. Ben Thompson picked up nine points on three field goals and a three-point shot.
Sophomore George Scharlau was in foul trouble most of the first half and put together a pair of three-pointers in the second half to score six in the game. Treyton Teige put in a single outside shot for three, Matthew Reisdorf was good for a field goal and two points, and Adam Pretasky put in one of two free throws.
The Mondovi trio of Avery Hoepner, Hunter Evans and Branden Becker scored 12 points apiece.
The Colfax boys have just one game this week, a home contest against the Durand Panthers this Thursday, January 26. The Vikings will welcome rival Elk Mound on January 31.
