GC DECA has ten place at District Competition

Glenwood City DECA had ten of the 18 members that attended the 45th annual DECA District I Career Development Conference high school competition Saturday, January 7, at University of Wisconsin-Stout’s Memorial Student Center received medals or earned a trophy.

Nyah Anderson and Makayla O’Brien both won gold medals while Kaylie Scalze came in second and will advance to the state DECA tournament to be held March 7-9 in Lake Geneva, WI.

In all, 48 winners and runners-up will advance to the state tournament.

The competition drew 646 students from 20 area high schools who competed in 18 individual and six team events.

West Salem took seven first places and had 11 state qualifers to lead all competing high schools. Hudson had the second-most qualifiers with nine followed by Holmen with six, Superior with four and three apiece for Glenwood City, Menomonie, Northwestern and Sparta. Eau Claire North and Chippewa Falls each had two qualifiers. Eau Claire Memorial and La Crosse Central had one apiece.

• Collin Schone/Matthew Bauman-role play medal & overall top finalist

• Melina Schultz/Emma Scholler-overall top finalist

• Bethany Ullom-role play medal

Other Glenwood City competitors included: Mae Buttles, Alexa Holden, Julia Nerby, Izzy Williams, Emily Bethell, Jason Radunz, Conner Olson and Jocelyn Krueger.

Students’ skills are tested in business services, marketing management, hospitality and tourism, marketing strategy, retail sales and services, sports and entertainment marketing, and financial services.

Since 1946 DECA has provided co-curricular programs for students around the world interested in marketing, finance, hospitality and management careers.

The competition was hosted by the UW-Stout marketing and business education undergraduate program and its affiliated Marketing and Business Education Association. A lead organizer was Brett Weinfurter, of Wisconsin Rapids, vice president of MBEA.
