COLFAX — Colfax boys’ basketball coach Garrett Maas said the win was not pretty, but it was still a win.
The Vikings hosted Amery January 3 in a non-conference contest, just four days after losing to Eleva-Strum by a single point in double-overtime. Maas said he hoped the Colfax squad would use the loss in Strum as a springboard into the Tuesday game and it pulled off it’s third win of the season on a score of 59-52.
Maas knows a tough schedule lays ahead for his team, but he also knows his team has improved since the beginning of the season.
“(The game) wasn’t quite to where it was on Friday night, but it’s leaps and bounds better than it had been previous games,” Maas stated. “Hopefully we’re taking strides in the right direction.”
The Colfax coach singled out George Scharlau, who led scoring in the game with 21 points, for his play against the Warriors. Maas said the sophomore did a great job of running the point for the Vikings and took some really hard hits that were not called. The coach said Scharlau kept his head and showed a lot of poise for a sophomore, and he hopes to see some great things out of Scharlau in the future.
Senior Aliymu Davis fouled out of the game with 3:22 left in the contest, but not before scoring 14 points with four field goals, a three-point shot from the top of the key, and a trio of charity shots. Jacob Larson picked up nine points, Ben Thompson was good for eight, Treyton Teige added six points to the board, and Matthew Reisdorf logged a free throw.
Amery’s Lane Christiansen led the Warriors with 16 points.
The win moves the Vikings to 3-6 overall, but they remain at 1-2 in the conference. They took on the Mounders in Elk Mound on January 6 and will face teams like Spring Valley, Elk Mound and Durand one more time in the regular season.
