EAU CLAIRE — Colfax girls’ basketball coach Joe Doucette found himself in unusual circumstances heading into this year’s holiday break.
In the past two seasons, the Vikings found themselves staring down the holiday tournaments with 4-2 (2015 – 2016) and 6-1 (2014 – 2015) records. After the team’s 41 – 36 loss to Eau Claire Regis’ Ramblers on December 22, the Viking girls are 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the Dunn-St. Croix.
The record has led to some frustration on behalf of the Colfax coaching staff.
“The bottom line is that we are 2-5, and not a very good team right now,” Doucette said. “We play in spurts and are not consistent at all.”
The Vikings shot for only 22 percent from the field and were 40 percent at the free throw line. Doucette said the team defends well enough to win, but is very weak offensively. He is looking for his team to roll up its sleeves and get to work.
The Colfax coach called out sophomore Alyssa Dachel for playing hard and logging five assists in the game against Regis. Dachel’s classmate, Emma Hurlburt, was given the task of keeping the Ramblers’ Hannah Anderson in check, something Doucette said Hurlburt did well with.
Despite the slow start to the season, Doucette still believes the Viking girls have the makings of a very good basketball team.
“We have to get everyone to get just a touch better,” he explained.
Senior Ally Heidorn led the Viking effort against Regis, tallying 12 points. Dachel dropped in a pair of shots from outside the arc and a free throw to take credit for seven points, and Savannah Henricks landed a couple three-pointers to pick up six points.
Hurlburt put in a couple field goals for four points, Taylor Irwin and Bryana Buchanan each logged three points, and freshman Jayna Bowe put in one of two free shots for a single point.
Rambler senior Hannah Anderson led Regis’ effort with 13 points.
The Vikings stepped back onto the court December 27 against Ashland during the 24th annual AAU Chris Griffin Holiday Classic held at UW – Stout’s Johnson Fieldhouse. They also went toe-to-toe with Baldwin-Woodville today (December 28) in the same tournament.
The Colfax girls will then have a short break before hosting the Elmwood/Plum City Wolves on January 5.
