Elk Mound letter winners take time to help others for Christmas

ELK MOUND — Members of the Elk Mound High School “E Club,” comprised of students who have earned a varsity letter, learned a valuable lesson about giving back the week before Christmas.

Club members went to a local Walmart, along with advisor David Lew, on December 20 to make good use of money raised by selling homecoming t-shirts, organizing homecoming activities, selling admission to the homecoming dance by purchasing items for four district families.

“We went shopping for household goods, toys, meals, and other items to make Christmas a little more merry for 15 people in our school district,” Lew explained.

He went on to say the E Club has been doing this every year during the 15 years he has taught at Elk Mound and he believes the activity can be credited to former high school physical education teacher and head football coach, Dan Pedersen. 

The athletes seem to enjoy themselves each year while shopping for the families selected to participate, and Lew said it is fun to watch the students get so involved in making other people happy at Christmas.

“The athletes say they like the companionship of shopping together as a group, and the warm feeling of knowing they are helping people in the community,” Lew finished.
