News for the week of December 18th to the 24th:
As the cold and snow of Sunday descended upon us, we were warmed with a visit from Leona. We always enjoy her stories and poems.
Monday found the residents in the Square where we were entertained by the Kindergarten students. They sang several Christmas songs that they learned for their Christmas Program which was held last week at the school. Dale Martel entertained us in the afternoon. We always enjoy his variety of both songs and instruments he plays. Later the Happy Hour on the Go cart served up our favorite adult beverages.
Tuesday morning Santa’s Helpers were busy in the Square wrapping presents to be handed out on Christmas Day. They did such a good job, some of the staff are thinking of hiring them to help them next year! Tuesday afternoon was Bingo in the Square, and many came away with bags full of goodies.
Wednesday was another busy day at the Big Yellow House. We started the day with Pastor Schroetter leading us in our weekly church service. We truly enjoyed his message, and as always enjoyed singing our favorite hymns. In the afternoon the Square was filled with sounds of the season as the Colfax Middle school choir took time to come and share many beautiful Christmas songs. Mrs. Christianson, the music teacher at Colfax schools, does such a wonderful job with all of her students.
It wouldn’t be Thursday without a fast pace game of volleyball. Several residents lined up in the East Dining Room for an hour of toss the ball. Everyone came away the winner, with all getting a little exercise in the process. The afternoon found the residents gathering for a Holiday Spelling Bee. Christmas treats were the prize for those who spelled their words correctly.
On Friday morning our residents gather for rosary led by Loretta. Then, it was time for our weekly Gospel sing along. The afternoon found us back in the Square for an hour of dime bingo. With the help of Michelle and Eileen, bingo always is loads of fun.
The Christmas weekend will be a busy one here at the Big Yellow House with many family and friends planning to visit and share a meal with their loved one. Next weeks’ activities include an outing to see the holiday lights, our monthly breakfast club and a New Year’s party with music by Honey and Me. As always, the public is invited to stop in for a visit, and stay for the fun!
Here is this week’s recipe from the Area Nursing Home cook book published in 1996.
Chili Con Queso submitted by Bobbe Henderson, LPN: 1 lb. Velveeta cheese, 1 can green chilies (chopped fine), 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce, 1 lb. ground beef (browned), ½ cup green pepper (chopped fine), 3 to 4 green onions (chopped fine), 1 tsp. garlic salt, and 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce. Melt together all ingredients. Serve in a chafing dish. Sprinkle with paprika. Serve with Doritos or Fritos.
Everyone at Colfax Health & Rehabilitation Center wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas!
Until next week,
