Bloomer/Colfax wrestlers have busy week

The Bloomer/Colfax wrestling team had a busy second week of action, splitting four duals which included its Heart O’ North opener before finishing at the Husky Invite at Eau Claire North.

Bloomer/Colfax stepped back onto the mat December 6 after taking second in Glenwood City at the John Timm Duals by hosting Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm in the HON opener in Colfax. The Blackhawks lost to the Bulldogs 45-30.

They opened the meet by winning five of the first seven weight classes, but then won only one match on a decision in the bottom half of the meet.

The team next wrestled in a quad at Cameron Thursday, December 8.

The team beat Cameron 55-12 and Unity 42-24, but lost to Northwestern 38-37. They finished the week in Eau Claire at North High School’s wrestling invitational. The Bloomer/Colfax team placed seventh out of 24 teams with 220 points.

The Blackhawks now have a break until Thursday, December 15, when they travel to Ladysmith.

Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm

Colfax freshman Sawyer Best led the way for the Blackhawks against the Bulldogs by copping six points for a fall on Konrad Sonnenberg only 59 seconds into the 106-pound match. There was no one at 113 pounds for the Bloomer/Colfax co-op, making the score six to six.

Cal Lueck of Bloomer won the 120-pound class over Dylan Anderson after a 7-3 decision to lift the Blackhawks to 9-6. Bloomer’s Jared Stoll was up next at 126 pounds, and got the fall on Daniel Michaelson to lift the co-op to 15-6. Ike Kramschuster took a forfeit at 132 pounds when the Bulldogs had no one to wrestle him, which increased Bloomer’s lead to 21-6.

Bulldog William Peters earned Chetek-Weyerhaeuser’s first six points via match when he defeated Kyle Schmidt in 49 seconds to make the score 21-12. Colfax wrestler Mitchel Harmon wrestled Levi Chamberlain and took just over a minute to push the Blackhawks to 27-12 after the 145-pound match.

Sam Peters wrestled Bloomer’s Jerrod Kressin at 152 pounds and earned a fall; the Blackhawks’ answered with a 5-1 decision at 160 pounds when Collin Bungartz went three periods against Justis Knutson to make the score 30-18.

From there on out, all the wins belonged to Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm, who earned 12 points with forfeits at 170 and 220 pounds. Colfax sophomore Tommy Anderson wrestled at 182 pounds, but could not best Daniel Chuchwar and lost on a 12-7 decision to give the Bulldogs another three.

Dominick Ippolite copped a fall from Bloomer’s Hunter Hall in the 195-pound class, and heavyweight Bulldog Jacob Konvicka toppled Bloomer exchange student Mohammed Smadi for a fall at 285 pounds to cap the win at 45-30.

Cameron Quad

The Blackhawks won against two schools and lost to another during their December 8 trip to Cameron for a quad. The team picked up 42 against Unity, who could only score 24. Ike Kramschuster (132), Mitchel Harmon (145), Collin Bungartz (170) and Cole Olson (195) all earned falls against Unity. Sawyer Best (106) and Jerrod Kressin (152) both took six points for forfeits in their weight classes, and Eric Wachtendonk (22) and Mohammed Smadi (285) won their matches on decisions for three points each.

Unity’s Blane Tendrup (120) grabbed the pin against Cal Lueck, Dilon Wakefield overtook Jared Stoll (126), Vinny Carlson beat Austyn Bartz (160), and Tony Carlson beat Colfax’s Tommy Anderson (182).

The Bloomer/Colfax boys also took on the Northwestern Tigers in Cameron and were just edged out of a win after Lueck and Harmon were awarded four points each for major decisions and Best picked up five points for a technical fall.

Anderson picked up a fall over the Tigers’ Luke Gregerson, Olson got a fall on Andrew Hanson, and Jared Stoll bead out Brody Burke on a fall. Collin Bungartz was subjected to a pin from Northwestern’s Jameson Pflug (170), Mohammed Smadi gave up six when Morgan Berggren (285) grabbed a fall, Calen Kirkpatrick beat Bloomer’s Kyle Schmidt at 132 with a fall, Zach Pooler did the same to Kramschuster at 138, and Northwestern’s Donny Pooler bested Adam Malinowski with a fall for six.

The Blackhawks beat the Comets, the host team, in 10 of 14 weight classes. There were double forfeits at 113 and 152 pounds, and Kramschuster, Bungartz, Olson and Wachtendonk won at 138, 170, 195 and 220 with forfeits.

Tommy Anderson got the fall on Jake Gouine at 182, Jarod Stoll beat Brendan Groskopf with a pin, Mitchel Harmon pinned Jonathen Odenbreit (145), and Adam Malinowski bested Ty Bernard with a fall. Best picked up four points on a 9-1 major decision over Remington Ladd at 106 pounds, and Lueck picked up three on a 9-8 decision over Gavin Gifford at 120 pounds.

Smadi and Schmidt were again beaten by their opponents, both by falls.

Eau Claire North

The Blackhawks traveled to Eau Claire North High School on December 10 and went back home later that afternoon after earning seventh place out of 24 teams by scoring 220 team points.

Colfax freshman standout, Sawyer Best, worked his way to fourth place overall, and earned 35 points for the team, at 106 pounds after winning his first round match on a fall and his quarterfinal on a major decision. He lost the semi-final and third-place matches on major decisions.

Bloomer’s Cal Lueck placed 15th at 120 pounds to give the team four points. Lueck grabbed four points after losing in the first three rounds, but prevailed on a forfeit by Chetek’s Dylan Anderson in the 15th-place match. Jared Stoll (126), placed 10th and nabbed 16 team points after losing a major decision in the first round, winning the second two rounds, and losing the ninth-place match on a major decision.

Ike Kramschuster beat Whitehall’s Michael Poulos in the preliminary round, but then could not get an edge in the subsequent four rounds. He placed 16th to take three points for the team at 132 pounds. Colfax’s Mitchel Harmon picked up 29 team points with a sixth-place finish at 145 pounds by winning the first championship round and the fifth-place but losing a major decision to Durand’s Logan Bauer in consolation round 1, and by a fall to North’s Brandon Holbrook in consolation round two.

Jaron Kressin took eighth place and 26 team points at 152 pounds after beating Superior’s Gabe Anderson in the first championship round. He dropped a quarterfinal match to Stanley/Boyd’s Sam Burzynski on a technical fall, and dropped consolation match 2 to Ellsworth’s Logan Melstrom on a decision. He then lost to Sam Peterson of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser via injury default.

Collin Bungartz (160) followed with an eighth-place win and 26 more team points after winning in the first championship round, but then dropping the quarterfinal, consolation, and seventh-place matches. Colfax sophomore Tommy Anderson (170) also took eighth and another 26 points when he got a fall on Whitehall’s Sonny Nygard in the first championship round, but then lost by a major decision, fall, and decision in the following rounds.

Cole Olson, of Colfax, was the Blackhawks leading scorer at North, picking up 41 points for third place. He won the first championship round and quarterfinal with falls before dropping the semi-final match to Prescott’s Ty Sanford on a fall. He stepped up again in the third-place match to beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Kyle Premeau with a fall.

Heavyweights Eric Wachtendonk (220) and Mohammed Smadi (285) placed 13th and 15th in their weight classes. Wachtendonk lost his first two matches, but won the second two to take 10 points, and Smadi dropped all four matches to score four points.
