Elk Mound girls stay perfect with basketball victories over Stanley-Boyd and Mondovi

By Cara L. Dempski

The Elk Mound girls’ basketball team stepped back on the court after Thanksgiving break in a big way.

The Mounders ended the month of November by outscoring the Stanley-Boyd Orioles by more than three to one on November 28 to nab a 66-14 non-conference road victory.

The team traveled to Mondovi on December 2 and picked up its first conference “W” of the 2016–2017 season. The Mounder girls headed home after trampling the Lady Buffaloes 52-24 in the D-Sc opener for both teams.

The Lady Mounders improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the lopsided wins.

Elk Mound will host the Durand Panthers on December 8 before heading to Boyceville December 13 to meet the Bulldogs.

Mounders’ coach Jordan Kongshaug was pretty happy with his team’s November 28 performance. The team committed only 11 fouls to the Orioles’ 14, and made 11 of 14 free throws.

“I thought we gave a very good defensive effort,” Kongshaug stated. “Our bench brought a lot of energy, and we got outstanding contributions from all 13 girls. It was an excellent team win.”

Elk Mound held a whopping 43-8 lead at the intermission and tacked on 23 more points in the second half while allowing the Orioles to net six points.

Sophomore Morgan Radtke led the Mounders with 10 points and was two for two with free throws against the Orioles on the way to Elk Mound’s victory in Stanley. She accrued only two fouls.

Kaitlyn Baier, Allie Weber and Elizabeth Fasbender all racked up eight points to help Elk Mound on its way to 66. Baier and Fasbender committed no fouls, while Weber logged only one. Weber made up for the foul by dropping in two of Elk Mound’s five three-point shots.

Riley Radtke and Crista Sweeney scored six points apiece. Radtke sank two three-pointers, and picked up only one foul. Sweeney matched Radtke’s single foul, but put in three field goals.

Megan Krall and Gracie Peterson both recorded five points, with Krall sinking a field goal and three-pointer and Peterson making two field goals and one of her two free throw attempts. The duo logged two fouls each.

Kami King made a field goal and shot 100 percent for free throws to score four in the game; the recorded only one foul. Hannah Cedarblade, Madysen Borofka and Alexis Schindler each chalked up two points to tack on the final six in Elk Mound’s score. Schindler was the only one of the trio to commit a foul.

Senior Carley Chwala led the Orioles with eight points. Junior Kate McLoone and sophomores Kenzie Vircks and Arianna Mason each scored two points apiece.

Coach Kongshaug said Elk Mound set the tone of the contest with Buffaloes early by attacking the glass.

“I thought we gave a great defensive effort, and we played with a lot of energy on the offensive end early in the game,” he stated.

Elk Mound ran to a 30-10 halftime lead and added 22 more points in the second half for the 52-24 win.

The Mounder girls’ basketball squad racked up 13 fouls and were two for seven on free throw attempts, but compensated by landing 25 field goals. In contrast, the Lady Buffaloes accrued 12 fouls, and were also two for seven on FTs, and landed four triples.

But four three-pointers were far from enough for the Buffaloes to win the game as the Mounders prevailed by 28 points. Morgan Radtke, Kami King and Elizabeth Fasbender split 30 points evenly between them to lead Elk Mound against Mondovi.

Kaitlyn Baier logged another eight points, and Crista Sweeney and Hannah Cedarblade each had four points. Allie Weber, Megan Krall and Madysen Borofka each recorded two points.
