Vikings lose homecoming game to Boyceville

By Cara L. Dempski

COLFAX — Colfax’ homecoming football contest against Boyceville October 7 started with a bang but ended with a whimper.

The Vikings got on the board first with a touchdown pass from quarterback Brad Kamp to receiver Tyler Snyder in the first quarter. Unfortunately, that would be the last time the team would score. The visiting Boyceville Bulldogs reeled off 32 unanswered points in the second half to claim a 32-6 victory that kept Colfax winless in conference play.

Head coach Matt DeMoe said the team played a good first half, controlling the line of scrimmage and the mood on the sidelines was positive and excited.

But that changed in the second half when Boyceville scored on a pair of 2-yard runs in the third quarter to take the lead.

“In the second half, the score was 12-6,” DeMoe said. “We were hanging our heads and not working as a team.

It didn’t get any better in the fourth. The Bulldogs added three more scores and 20 points to their tally in the final 12 minutes for the win.

Simply put, the Vikings had trouble moving the ball much of the contest and couldn’t stop the Bulldogs’ second-half march to victory.

The Vikings rushed for only 80 yards and Brad Kamp threw for negative yardage in the team’s second-to-last game of the season. The Bulldogs ran 225 yards and passed for another 80 on their way to 305 total offensive yards.

Colfax won the toss and elected to defer until the second half. The Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on their first possession, and wound up punting the ball back to the Vikings.

Adam Pretasky caught the ball at the 39-yard line and ran it all the way back to the Viking 49 for the team’s initial possession. The Vikings picked up a fresh set of downs on a series of runs from Kamp and running back Brett Schindler. Then Kamp was sacked for a loss of three yards and his pass to Dalton Schotter was incomplete, which forced a Colfax punt.

The Bulldogs were at fourth down with three yards to go when quarterback Bryce Boda fumbled at his own 12-yard line. Colfax recovered the ball with excellent field position for a score.

Kamp was staring down a fourth-down attempt with eight yards to go when he aired out a 10-yard pass and hit Tyler Snyder for the touchdown. Kamp then handed the ball off to Schindler, who was not able to get past a host of Bulldog defenders for the conversion, and the score stayed 6-0 with 3:53 left in the first.

The Bulldogs and Vikings traded defensive stops for the rest of the half, and it took until 6:45 in the third quarter before either team scored again.

Boyceville’s Boda handed the ball to senior back Gavin Olson who ran two yards to put the Bulldogs on the board. Boda’s conversion run was stopped at the one-yard line, and the score evened out 6-6.

Hunter Lipke, another Boyceville senior, ran for another two yards to score a second touchdown for the Bulldogs in the third quarter. Despite Olson’s failed conversion attempt, the Bulldogs went up to 12-6 with 2:23 left in the third.

Boyceville scored three more times in the fourth quarter. Boda called his own number on a two-yard scoring run and Micadin Kahl caught the conversion pass to make it 20-6. Boda and Kahl hooked up for 38 yards pass completion and a score to put the Bulldogs ahead 26-6. In the final tally of the night, Hunter Lipke scored his second TD of the game, a 13-yard run, with only 3:05 left in the game for the 32-6 final.

DeMoe said after the game the Vikings needed another offensive performance like it had in Mondovi and did not get one.

“I was pretty disappointed with the second-half performance,” DeMoe stated. “We needed to show more heart and pride, and we didn’t.”

The Vikings will close the regular season October 14 when they travel to Durand to meet the league-leading Panthers.
