Elk Mound homecoming spoiled by 39-14 loss to Durand

ELK MOUND — Elk Mound’s head coach Dave Lew promised the students and fans of Mounder football a game for the history books during the homecoming pep rally the afternoon of Friday, October 7.
The game didn’t turn out how he expected, when the Mounders were stunned 39-14 by a pack of Panthers stalking a Dunn-St. Croix championship.
“I really don’t have anything to say,” Lew stated after the game. “They (Durand) are a good football team.”
The Panthers held Elk Mound to 93 yards rushing, forcing the Mounders into the air for 71 passing yards from backup quarterback Dylan Black. He was forced to take over after senior quarterback Dane Lew left the game with a shoulder injury.
On the other side of the field, Durand rushed for 208 yards and passed for another 68.
The Mounders were on a scoring drive early in the first quarter when they fumbled the ball in the end zone. Panther Adayre Glaus picked it up and sprinted to the other end of the field to put Durand on the board. The subsequent conversion run failed and the Panthers went to 6-0 with 10:56 left in the first.
Panther Karter Kurth put another six on the board for Durand with his one-yard run in the second quarter, and Glaus’ pass to Will Berger for the conversion was successful, making the score 14-0 with 10:42 left in the half.
Running back Josh Biesterveld ran 34 yards for a third Durand touchdown and Kurth punched through the Elk Mound defense for the conversion to add eight more points to the tally and raise the Panther lead to 22-0 with 4:03 to go before halftime.
Durand punctuated the half with a 37-yard field goal from Lawson Harmon with no time left on the clock to make its lead 25-0 at halftime.
Neither team scored until the closing seconds of the third quarter, when Biesterveld dove through a herd of Mounder defenders at the end of a two-yard run to strike gold. After a good PAT from Harmon, Durand upped its advantage to 32-0 at the :25 mark for the third.
The Mounders finally got on the board in the fourth quarter after Tyler Sahm ran in from four yards out for the TD. Black handed Sahm the ball for the conversion, and Sahm stretched to push the ball across the goal line to earn two more points and make the score 32-8 with 9:30 to go in the game.
Sahm found the goal line again less than two minutes later after a series of downs resulting from a successful on-side kick recovery for Elk Mound. This time, Black’s pass missed its mark for the conversion, leaving the score 32-14 and the clock at 7:55.
The Panthers would take one last swipe at Elk Mound with a six-yard touchdown run from Glaus and a successful point-after kick from Harmon that raised the score to 39-14 with 7:09 left in the game.
With the loss, the Mounders failed to clinch the playoff spot they qualified for in their September 30 victory over Boyceville. They will travel to meet the Spring Valley Cardinals October 14 for their final regular-season game.
