HAYWARD — Colfax freshman Abby DeMoe scored an 88 over 18 holes at the October 3 WIAA Division 2 girls’ sectional golf meet in Hayward to earn a trip to the state tournament that was held this past Monday and Tuesday, October 10 and 11, at University Ridge in Madison.
DeMoe and fellow freshman Morgan Schleusner traveled to Hayward for last Monday’s Sectional meet after the Vikings’ pair were along the four players from non-qualifying teams to earn individual sectional berths at the regional meet held September 28 in Spooner.
Morgan Schleusner shot a 111 over 18 holes to finish in a three-way tie for 38th among the individual players.
DeMoe tied for seventh with Baldwin-Woodville junior Hope Tiffany on the par 72 Hayward Golf Course. DeMoe and Tiffany both finished with the lowest individual scores from non-qualifying state teams. The top six individual spots were filled by golfers from Hayward and Spooner, both of whom qualified for the state meet.
The host Hurricanes took the sectional championship with a score of 335, 14 strokes better than the runner-up Spooners Rails, who shot a 349. Northwestern was third with 391, Baldwin-Woodville was just a stroke back in fourth at 392 followed by Ellsworth at 3895, Ladysmith with a 399, Amery at 433 and Osceola finished eighth after scoring a 457.
The top two teams at the sectional meet along with the top three individuals from non-qualifying teams earn berths to the state tournament. Kendra Maki, a junior from Northwestern, was the third and final individual state qualifier after she carded a 90 to take ninth.
DeMoe earned the top individual qualifying spot on a tie-breaker. Baldwin-Woodville’s Hope Tiffany, who also shot 88, but took 42 shots on the back nine, while DeMoe took only 41 which was a six shot improvement over the front nine where DeMoe scored a 47.
Schleusner appeared to struggle on the fourth and 13th holes, shooting five to six over par on each. DeMoe’s greatest challenge appeared to be the par-five 15th, where she shot for three over.
Coach Myers expressed pleasure with how well DeMoe performed.
“It’s satisfying to watch a girl who has worked hard all season fulfill her goal of making it to state,” Myers said. “I can’t wait to see how well she golfs at University Ridge.”
DeMoe took part in a practice round at University Ridge Golf Course on Sunday, October 9 and was scheduled to tee-off in state competition on Monday morning, October 10. Play concluded the following day.
