Colfax golf team finishes fifth at Spooner regional, sends two individuals to Sectionals

By Cara L. Dempski

SPOONER — The Viking girls’ golf team missed moving on to sectional play after taking 422 strokes and fifth place at the WIAA Division 2 regional match in Spooner last Wednesday, September 28.

But two members of the Colfax squad did qualify for play in the Sectional tournament.

Freshmen Abby DeMoe and Morgan Schleusner played to scores of 101 each in Spooner, to earn spots as individual qualifiers in the Monday’s (October 3) Division 2 Hayward Sectional.

DeMoe and Schleusner were joined by teammates Hannah Yingst, Megan Schleusner and Kaely Rieck at the regional meet which was played at Spooner Golf Club.

The team score was comprised of the top four individual scores on the team. As previously noted, both DeMoe and Schleusner led with 101 strokes, Megan Schleusner scored 109 strokes and Yingst recorded 111. Kaely Rieck finished with 128 strokes over 18 holes.

While all three players seemed to stick within a shot or two of most holes, there were some struggles indicated on the scorecard. The eighth hole, a par five, appeared daunting for everyone but DeMoe, who shot for par. Morgan Schleusner made it in seven strokes, while older sister Megan tied with Yingst with eight strokes, and Rieck came in with a final count of 14.

Rieck then appeared to have a hard time shaking off the eighth and carded 12 strokes on the par-four 10th.

The scores on the back nine appeared to even out for the whole team, and the only one who had significant trouble was DeMoe, who shot for nine on a four-par 18th.

The four teams moving on to sectionals were Hayward, Spooner, Northwestern and Ladysmith. Joining DeMoe and Schleusner as individual qualifiers were Cumberland’s Faith Erickson, who topped the two Viking players with her 98 strokes, and Dani Pierce of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser, who shot for a score of 105.

Coach Kim Myers took DeMoe and Schleusner to the Hayward course on October 1 to play a practice round on the same course they’d play on at the sectional match October 3.

The top two teams and top three individuals from non-qualifying teams at the Hayward Sectional will advance to the WIAA State meet that will be held this coming Monday and Tuesday, October 10 and 11, at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
