Colfax football grabs first win of the season against Steelheads

By Cara L. Dempski

WASHBURN — The Colfax Vikings football team found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter and in the process picked up its first win of the season against the Washburn/Bayfield/South Shore Steelheads in a 14-0 non-conference road victory in Washburn September 23.

“We were pretty nervous and struggled in the first half,” head coach Matt DeMoe said.

“We would get a good drive going, and then the excitement and nerves started to take over.”

Colfax held the Steelheads to 63 rushing yards and 20 passing, while putting together 90 yards rushing and 108 passing for the night.

Defensively, the Steelheads recorded four sacks, three interceptions, and recovered one fumble. The Vikings fared just as well, sacking Steelhead quarterback Connor Sorenson twice. They also nabbed three interceptions and recovered three fumbles.

DeMoe said, “We really stuck it to them on defense.”

Both of Colfax’s fourth-quarter scoring drives were set up by interceptions from senior Mitchell Kiekhafer, who registered three picks in the game. These were transferred into a pair of scoring passes from senior quarterback Brad Kamp to junior wideout Brett Schindler. Kamp hit Schindler for a 43-yard touchdown strike at 11:48 of the final stanza to break a scoreless deadlock. The Vikings made good on the two-point conversion to take a 8-0 advantage.

The pair reconnected for a 12-yard touchdown pass and catch with 2:16 left in the game to make the final 14-0 in the Vikings favor.

Schindler was the Vikings leading rusher with 53 yards. Kamp hit all six of his throws for 108 yards and the two scores to Schindler.

Colfax, now 1-5 overall and 0-3 in conference, will travel to Mondovi to meet the 0-6 Buffaloes on September 30.

DeMoe was asked if he thought when the season started that the Vikings would have a better overall record than the Buffaloes.

“No, I didn’t think that,” he said. “They (Mondovi), have some great weapons at their disposal. They’re still a good team.
