Colfax girls’ golf continues busy early season schedule

By Cara L. Dempski

COLFAX — The Viking girls’ golf team kept busy on the links as they had three more matches this past week and were presented unique challenges at each one.

Hayward

The opening of the football season for the Vikings coincided with the girls golf team’s fourth match of the season. Coach Kim Myers took three players with her to the Big Fish invitational in Hayward on August 18.

Abby DeMoe, Hannah Yingst and Abby Kluekmann traveled with Myers to the match and participated with 12 other teams on the day. While Stanley-Boyd won the tournament, freshman Abby DeMoe came away with a tie for 12th place with a score of 95.

“The course proved to be difficult for the girls, especially the back nine,” Myers said of her team.

Amery

Up next for the Vikings was a challenging day last Tuesday, August 23 on the Amery Golf Course. The scoring leader for the day in Amery was Megan Schleusner, who finished with 111 strokes. Morgan Schleusner followed her with 114, Yingst with 120, and DeMoe and Amanda Christianson with 131 a piece.

Myers said of the Amery meet, “The water and hazards ate up a lot of balls and added strokes to the girls’ scores.”

Myers also said the windy conditions did not help the team. New Richmond won the tournament.

Osceola

On August 25, the Colfax girls played a regular match at Osceola’s Krooked Kreek Golf Course front nine, and a scramble on the back nine. Out of 10 teams, the team took sixth in the scramble, and DeMoe won fourth place on the front nine with 46 strokes.

“It was a perfect day for golf – low winds and beautiful temperatures,” Myers said of the meet.

The Viking girls played August 30 at Baldwin-Woodville and returned home to host a meet at the Whitetail Golf Club on August 31.
