Elk Mound gets upset in regional semi-finals

ELK MOUND – The Elk Mound baseball team was at home to take on the Boyceville Bulldogs in the Regional semi-finals on Wednesday, June 1. The Bulldogs pulled off the upset with a 1-0 victory.

On the hill for the Mounders was junior Trey Mohr. Mohr pitched the complete game and gave up one run on three hits. Mohr issued two walks and struck out seven Bulldog batters on the afternoon. Mohr pitched very well, but ended up taking the loss in the low scoring game.

The only run of the game came in the top of the first inning with the Bulldogs scoring the run. Mohr issued a lead off walk and would later come around to score on a fielder’s choice to the shortstop as the Bulldogs were able to beat out the double play to score the run.

Elk Mound managed only six hits in the game and one walk. They were unable to do anything with their hits as it was James Palmer from Boyceville that shut them down. Collecting hits for the Mounders included: junior Dane Lew, senior Cole Tyman, sophomore Ethan Kjellberg, senior Alex Hollister, senior Grant Kjellberg, and junior Carter Pritchard with a double.

The Mounders were unable to mount a threat on Palmer throughout the game and Head Coach Paul Andrea knew it was going to be tough.

“It snowballs, hitting is contagious and so is not hitting,” stated Andrea after the loss on how his team struggled at the plate.

There were five seniors on this Elk Mound squad that all made huge contributions to the team and they will be hard to replace.

“We’re going to miss them, we’ve had a lot of success with those guys, they have been a huge part of our success over the years,” said Andrea about the seniors on the team.

Elk Mound had a great year finishing second in conference play behind Durand and had an overall record of 17-4 on the year. The team will be hungry to get back on the field next spring and finish what they couldn’t this season.
